How to baby proof a sliding glass door?

Sayla can unlock and open our sliding glass door and I'm not sure how to baby proof it. It has one step out and then a concrete slab (we are building a deck this summer) and I'm worried about her falling out onto the ground. I'm also worried about her letting the cats out. Any ideas?

  • Cut a piece of wood that will snuggly fit into the track to hold the door shut. Just make sure it's sanded and fits tight so she can't remove it.
  • Loading the player...
  • my grandmother has a broom handle that she lays in the track behind the part of the door that opens.  That way the door cannot be opened, even if it is unlocked.  The only thing you need to worry about is making sure it can't fall into place if YOU are outside, because then you'll be locked out!

  • We have a metal pipe in our track.  Same concept, but cannot be splintered if someone tries to break in.  I live in Albuquerque, land of crime.  We call it the boogie stick.

  • When I had a sliding glass door, I used a broom handle in the track, that door wouldn't budge even for an adult.
  • For DD we had to get a bar that would sit above her reach (she's been able to take the boards out). They sell kits for under $10 at hardware stores.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions! I appreciate it.
