Aflac? Got some bizarre advice last night...

When something sounds too good to be true... it probably is, right?

I went to a local MoM's meeting last night, and one of the ladies who just had triplets asked me if I had looked into Aflac for supplementary insurance.  I said, no, and she told me that they sent her money every time she was on bed rest, child in the NICU, well baby appts, etc.  She ended up with $20k and she only pays $160/month.

So, if I took supplemental insurance to cover what was left of my actual bills after my primary insurance paid, why would I expect a payout in any amount?

Is this a scam?

  • I asked an aflac guy about this. Sounds like your friend had several of the supplemental policies that the aflac guy told me about. It's not a scam, but I believe you have to have had the policy for 10 months in order to use it on anything related to a pregnancy. (In other words, once you're already pregnant, it's too late.)

  • I have Aflac for short-term disability and hospitilazation (outside of my primary insurance through my employer).  The Aflac insurance will cover the things she mentioned.  However (this is the kicker) - you have to have started the coverage for at least a certain amount of time (8wks or so?) before you even got pregnant.  You can't get coverage after you're already pregnant, if you want to use it for pregnancy-related services (like delivery, bedrest, etc).

  • Okay thanks.  She did mention that her husband had to fly to CA (from TX) to sign the paperwork since CA recognized coverage same day, rather than 8-10 weeks.  It probably varies from state to state.

Too late for me, I guess!

  • yeah, it's pretty common among triplet moms. i couldn't get it because in louisiana you had to have it before you got pregnant or something.

  • It seems like something I probably ignored when we were doing fertility treatments.  That would be a good place for them to aim their advertising!  Hindsight's 20/20 and I really didn't expect to cash in on my children's births on purpose!

  • I had two policies, one for disability for me and then NICU, ICU Hospital coverage.

with all three babies, I got close to 200,0000. yes it is worth it. They pay you directly and not the hospital doctors etc and it is not taxable.

  • It's definitely useful if you're not already pg!  A gf of mine is an Aflac agent, and got most of our friends signed up.  I, unfortunately, was already pg.

  • We had the hospitalization policy.  I was on bedrest for 6 wks in the hospital and both of my babies were there about 5.5 wks.  They pay you by the day.
  • I have the short term disability (and have had it for over a year), but the dumb aflac person rep I deal with said I could buy the NICU coverage anytime doesn't matter if I am pG or not.  I went to buy it this year and she said the policy changed and since I am already PG I can't buy it.  Kinda pi$$ed me off but what are you going to do.

  • I don't post here much as I don't have time with the 3 kids, but I figured I would let you know.

MH is an Aflac agent in here in NJ. He said "In our state, you can get the hospital coverage while pg, and it will cover any complications from pg but not the delivery itself. Even though Aflac is a Nationwide company, it is the individual states dept of insurance that decides what can be offered."

    Hope that helps.
