Can't get into the ob until 8 weeks preg?

Does this feel like too long? My gyn ceased all ob work a few years back so I am calling obs around the area for an appt.....some can't see me at all until April?!!! Does 8 weeks in feel too long to go to a dr at all? I feel like it's the first thing people do...take a home test, then go to the ob...but I am new to this

Re: Can't get into the ob until 8 weeks preg?

  • A lot of ob's don't won't see you until you are 8 weeks.  It's  not unusual at all.  My OB generally sees patients around 7 or 8 weeks.  I got in at 5 weeks only because they have a new receptionist who scheduled me right away instead of having me wait a few weeks.

  • No that is actually the normal time frame for most ob's.  The office I go to makes your first appt between 8 and 10 weeks.  They will give you a script for an early ultrasound though.  I have had them both times between 7 and 9 weeks.  The waiting can be hard, but it's pretty standard.
  • I just went to the OB's office this week, and by LMP I'm 9 weeks. We think I'm actually around 7 weeks, but we won't know for sure until our first ultrasound in 2 weeks. 8 weeks is not unusual.
  • Both of my practices, I had one with just doctors and another with a midwife, which I'm using now, and both practices do no see anyone until between 8 and 10wks along.

They only say to come in as soon as possible for bloodwork confirmation.

  • That is pretty standard, actually.

The only exceptions I have seen are as follows:

    • You were on fertility treatments to get pg in the first place.
    • High-risk pregnancy or previous problems in pg
    • Have a 5 week appt where all you do is see the nurse who goes over what to expect (no u/s or b/w, etc)

I've had 2 m/cs and I still don't see my Ob until 8 weeks.  It is hard to wait, but possible.

  • I actually didn't get in until I was 9 weeks.  Don't worry.  It's seems to be standard practice.  You'll see that some people can get in early, but I was told 8-10 weeks is very typical.

  • My OB doesn't have apts until 6-9 weeks either it's not unusual.
  • Not unusual, in fact some practices won't see you until you are 10-12 weeks.
  • That's standard.  Some won't see you until 12 weeks.

  • Thanks guys! If I can't get in until 8 weeks, who do I consult about workouts, medicines, caffeine, etc. You know, all those first time mom questions. And, is it not normal to go in for confirmation of pregnancy? I mean, I know false positives don't really happen, but I guess it feels so unofficial
  • I think it is pretty normal to have to wait until then.  I know it seems like forever but the time will fly right by.  What I did was go into my regular dr. to have them tell me for sure that I was pregnant and how far along they showed me to be.  They instructed me to start taking the prenatals, and drinking lots of water until the OB could get me in.  That really helped to ease my mind a little bit knowing that, yes there is a baby in there, and I am so far along....
  • Where I live they don't see you until 12 weeks. You meet with a nurse at 10 weeks.
  • Completely normal.  My first real appointment was at 8 weeks.  Also, don't expect an u/s at your first appointment, either.  Most offices won't do an early one unless there is a medically necessary reason.

Have you been to your family physician? As far as I know, OBs don't do initial pregnancy tests. I had to see my family physician first. He confirmed the pregnancy, and then referred me to an OB. I called them, they received the paperwork confirming my pregnancy and scheduled my first appointment for 10 weeks. It's pretty standard, as far as i Know.

  • I didn't have my first real appt with DD till 9 weeks so that is perfectly reasonable.
  • I didn't have my first appointment til 10 weeks.

  • I was kind of wondering the same thing. I am 6.5wks and I can't get in until Feb. 18 for an appointment with a nurse and the March 8 w/ a midwife!

  • My OB doesn't see new patients until 8 weeks. I think that's pretty common.

  • Like others said, I think that's pretty standard for a lot of OB's.

If it makes you feel any better, my MW prefers to begin prenatal visits between 12-14 weeks (so long as there's no obvious issues).

  • Like the other girls have said, that time frame is pretty normal.  As for your questions, there isn't a whole lot you have to worry about very early on.  Avoid alcohol and drugs.  You can continue working out but don't push yourself harder than normal.  Keep hydrated and pick up some prenatals and DHA supplements (any kind is fine).

There are some other things that are more a matter of opinion and your doctor may or may not give you the same guidelines.  Some people choose to avoid artificial sweeteners, reduce caffeine intake and avoid lunch meat due to the risk of listeria.

Ask questions on here but if you really need to know something (i.e. you get sick or have pain) just give a call to the doctor.

I think so... but when I first called my OB service at 7w4d they told me their FIRST available was at 11 weeks.  I was like "are you kidding???".
