1st Trimester

Worried about 1st visit!

I'm 5 weeks pregnant and I called to schedule my 1st appointment with a midwife, and they aren't going to book me until between my 10th and 12th week.  Isn't the first trimester really important?  Shouldn't I be taking prenatal vitamins or something?  This is my first pregnancy and I'm feeling very anxious about not having any guidelines beyond what I find on the internet (which is often contradictory).  I've quit smoking and drinking, and I'm weaning myself off caffeine, but I don't know what else I should be doing!

Re: Worried about 1st visit!

  • Yes, you should go buy prenatal vitamins, stat! My doc recommended Prenatals with DHA in them. You could go buy "What to expect when you're expecting" or just pick it up from a used bookstore, browse thebump under 1st Tri. You could also call your doc and ask them if they could do an educational visit with you. I don't think taking care of yourself during pregnancy is rocket science, so just take a deep breath, and call your doc with your worries.

  • If your worried about the prenatal vitamins they sell some over the counter at some vitamins stores am not sure which ones will work but am sure the people there will help... your in my T&P
  • I am 4w preggo and I also called to schedule my 1st appt.  They scheduled me for February 25 (I too thought this was soo far out).  It is also our first and we are so anxious for that day to get here but really want to just tell SOMEONE that we are expecting.  I take prenatal vitamins and when I talked to the office today the nurse told me to continue taking them. However I can feel your anxiousness about not knowing any guidelines.  I'm also curious what to expect on that 1st appointment.  Happy & Healthy pregnancy to you =)

  • Thanks for the quick responses!  I haven't had any symptoms yet, but I was SO UPSET after I talked to the clinic that I think that the hormones everyone talks about may be kicking in!  I feel like crying!  I will get myself some prenatal vitamins and hope they are the right ones.
  • I just had my first appt at 9 weeks, yesterday. Doctors usually schedule from 9-12 weeks. Typically if you before them you can't see much via ultrasound. Sometimes heartbeats cannot be confirmed until after 6 weeks also.

You can always call back and request to do blood work to make sure your levels are increasing as needed. Just be honest with them and tell them you need a prenatal consultation appt. I did that with my first.

I do recommend getting some prenatal vitamins. Go to your local pharmacy and tell them your situation, they will make a good recommendation.

    Good luck to you!

  • Thanks, that makes me feel better.  I think I am also anxious because my husband is away and doesn't get back for another week (and has no access to phone or email) so I haven't been able to tell anyone that I'm pregnant (I just found out on Monday).  I want him to be the first to know, but this is one hard secret to keep!
