Yes, when you get bigger the weight of everything in there can restrict the flow... The magic number I heard was 4 months, but really it's just whenever it starts getting uncomfortable for you. Your body will let you know.

Can't remember exactly but I started to break myself of the habit as soon as I could with my first. Something you may want to try for comfort while sleeping is a body pillow called the snoogle. It definitely helped as I got bigger.
I can still sleep on my back, my doctor knows about it, and he said that everything is fine. Just go by what your body tells you.
