Push Present??

Just wondering if anyone is expecting a push present from their DH?? I have heard of this before, but don't really know anyone that has gotten one. If you are getting one...what are you hoping to get???

Re: Push Present??

  • I'm really, really hoping I get a baby.

  • Not to be rude...but what in the heck is a Push Present?! As if we don't have enough expenses I'm to expect my DH to spend MORE money on something we don't need? This seems silly!

  • I'm getting twins. I didn't expect a present last time and I don't this time either.

  • Only a baby.  I will probably get/order a mother's ring sometime after though.
  • I don't think I'll be getting a gift (I don't expect one either)...the gift is the baby!

  •

    Vicotin and hemmoroid cream! hahaha

I always get a new birthstone pendant on my mother's necklace... not really a push present, just proud to add a new baby.

  • DH already gave me the best present in the whole world, our little baby boy! If he did it on his own accord...ok, but I would never ask for one.  It's tacky, not to mention he spoils me as it is.  Come on ladies, these precious babies are our presents!!

    Yes!!

  • I have never even heard of that, but for some reason I picture myself in the hospital bed pushing with all my might, and my SO going.. "Wait wait... I have something for you! SURPRISE"

    I would strangle him, lol.

I know thats probably NOT how it goes, just how I pictured it.

  • I didn't get one with DD and I don't expect to get one this time, I'm getting a new baby and that's all that counts. I did get a david yurman necklace from DH when we found out we were pregnant again as a surprise but I wouldn't classify it as a push present.
  • Considering I am having a c-section I don't expect a push present...

But in any case I wouldn't want one, my baby is my present Smile

  • I wanted a camcorder, but we ended up getting one from FIL for Christmas, so now just baby.  I figured a camcorder would be a good push present because I definitely don't want any video of the labor or delivery, but I do want videos of LO.

Now that we have one I can't think of anything, although I'd like maybe a bracelet or a ring with LO's name on it.  But that can be a mother's day thing, or pretty much any holiday, and I don't want to spend any extra money around LO's birth that I could be spending on LO.

    THIS! Great present. lol

  • I don't know about you but I think a brand new baby is the greatest present of all.  I would never ask my H for another present on top of that.  But to each their own.

Push Presents I have noticed are more common in the South...don't know why but that has just been my observation.....

I'm really tempted to make a virgin margarita now....

I'm going to have DH make one in a flask and bring it with to the hospital.  Then he can just add it to my ice chips!  Instant frozen margarita!

And whoever came up with the idea of a "push present" is pretty ridiculous in my book... of course the baby is the present. I hadn't ever even heard of such a thing until I came on The Bump.

Cheers! Drinks I would kill for a marg!

  • I have a charm bracelet that DH will get me a charm for with her birthdate.  I don't really understand the idea of a super expensive present.
  • My cousin got a gorgeous diamond neclace with 3 diamonds after her 3rd kid. I thought it was nice, but I dont expect anything from DH.

Maybe flowers or something when we all come home from the hospital? Other than that the baby is the gift!

  • I think I would be so mesmerized by the baby that I wouldn't pay attention to a gift.
  • I've had friends all over the US get push presents, not just in the south, but who knows...  I think they're up there with giving each other presents, like jewelry, on your wedding day.
  • Umm... the baby is my present.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • I'd rather give DH the present , he's the one who has to put up with all these damn hormones.

This - I have a charm bracelet and he will probably get me something baby related to go on it, but no, I don't expect anything at all!

  • I didn't hear of it until I saw a pic on FB of a friend with diamond earrings and a necklace as her push present. Of course I pointed it out to DH saying "How can someone afford this with a new baby to take care of!" So now we joke about what things we'll get as push presents. I'm hoping for a nice bottle of gin :-) But I won't expect anything except the joy of our new family!

  • I'm getting a cute baby too (imagine that)!  But I better also get a whole lot of waiting on me hand and foot, so that I can just sit and ooo and ahhh over that baby...  I wouldn't turn down a nice glass of bubbly though....

  • I don;t think it is a push present, but I like to get a new tattoo after I am done breastfeeding.
  • My present has been dinner cooked almost every night since I found out I was pregnant and would come home faint with hunger almost every night.  Although, after the baby is born, I would not mind eating my weight in sushi and washing it down with a cold beer.

  • Yep, I'm getting one.  He wants to get me a diamond/sapphire eternity band to match my wedding band (sapphire color to be determined once we find out the sex).

My husband said, "You deserve something amazing after the amazing work you'll have put in" by carrying the baby for 9+ months.  I think it's a sweet gesture.

OF COURSE the baby is our real "present," but I'm not above being rewarded for some hard work.

  • Lets see...

    1.  Finding out the gender of my LO.

    2.  My LO

    3. Flowers to match the color of the baby (blue for boy, pink for girl).  I asked my DH if he would at least do me the favor of getting me flowers for this special occasion because he never gets me flowers for anything else!

  • OMG THIS!!! I think its EXTREMELY self righteous to say that the baby is the present! If that were the case, then our husbands could damn well carry the baby for 9 months, push their bodies to the limit giving birth, and bust their butts getting back to pre-pregnancy size afterward to "look like the men we married", since the baby would be their "present" too.

That being said, a push gift is not supposed to technically be for "pushing" (hence why c-section mamas get them too). Its a gift to commemorate the birth of your child and to thank you for all of your hard work over the past 9 months. No matter how supportive your husband is during your pregnancy (and I have an amazingly supportive husband), they can still never 100% put themselves in our shoes.

I agree with PP, the push gift is not just a southern thing...in fact I assumed it was more of a northeast (i.e. NY/NJ) thing. However, upon doing a little research, it appears that the push gift is rooted in history going back hundreds of years. In India, for example, the birth of a baby is marked by gold jewelry being given to the mother.

I am not saying that you should ask for a big expensive push gift, especially if you are on a tight budget due to your new arrival, however a small token (chocolates, flowers, that often mentioned margarita, lol) is not too much to ask for.

That being said, I am getting a gorgeous pair of diamond and pearl Di Modolo earrings as my push present, and I don't feel one bit bad about it! Wink

  • I don't think that push presents are a new thing, although maybe the name is.   My dad gave my mom a necklace after I was born with the idea that it would go to me when I got older.  I didn't know that was the ultimate goal until my mom took off the necklace and gifted me at law school graduation.  It was really touching and meant a lot.  She also got jewelry when my brother was born.

If you want to get a gift to mark the occasion, go for it.

  • I think we can all agree baby is the best gift:) However once the baby is born I do want a claddagh ring with the birthstone of my husband and baby. But I guess it won't be a push gift because I will probably just order it online after the baby is here. They aren't expensive, and they are irish rings that mean different things depending on how you wear them. I will obviously wear mine to mean that my heart is taken.
