Re: multiples on clomid?

  • I have a co-worker who had triplets on clomid.  She's young & healthy and everything went very well.

  • I have twins now because of clomid but it was my third clomid pregnancy.

I know 2 other ob/gyn doctors who both had triplets from clomid.  I've never seen anyone else.  We all figure it is our ob/gyn curse.

I think your RE is preparing you for this possibility because he wants you to be fully informed that it may happen.  AKA he doesn't want you to sue him later for non-disclosure.  The risk is still low.  My best friend did an IUI with (I'm not kidding) over 15 mature follicles and only had twins.

Good luck with your decision!  I'm thrilled to have twins....I never ever want to be pregnant again.

  • We do not know yet if we have more then one...I was on 50 mg cd3-7 and only got a prog test on cd25...I never had a ultrasound done to tell me how many eggs I had coming...

I am secretly hoping for twins, DH not so much..I never even thought about triplets! That is a hard choice Im sorry..Im kinda glad I didn't know how many were ready...

Ill let you know asap how many I have in there..Im pretty small so I don't know how well I could hold triplets either!

    Keep us posted!

  • I don;t have any imput on the Clomid thing butI do want to say that personally I would be worried about an RE that seems happy/excited about triplets.

  • Just a thought, but if you want positive outcomes try looking on the multiples page.

My opinion- What will be will be! Might as well try.

  • He doesn't want you to have a pregnancy that you do not desire.  He's doing the right thing by telling you the worst case scenario.

Here is how I looked at it.  For a given cycle, you have about a 20% chance of getting pregnant.  Right?  One egg meets one sperm.  By adding two additional eggs your 20% chance does not equal 100%.  You still only have a 20% chance with each egg.

Does that make sense?  There is a lot (a ton) that has to go perfectly to actually have triplets from clomid.

You just have to do what makes you feel comfortable!

yeah he kept saying I only had a 20% chance of getting pregnant still..I guess I was just focusing on the bad things he was saying...Embarrassed

  • Totally understable!! If someone kept saying triplets....I would probably not hear anything else.  Good luck with your decision.
  • The risk is really low. There are so many ladies on the bump that have had multiple eggs and still weren't pregnant. Like dca said, there are so many factors that all have to line up for all 3 to work out. I personally would not be worried about it.

This!!! My RE tries really hard to avoid multiple pregnancies.  His goal is one healthy baby.

On another note... I am not sure when you had PROM, or if you talked to a peri about it.  My peri's biggest advice was to not get pregnant with multiples again.  She said that it was the highest risk of PROM.  She also said that since I already had PROM, I am more likely to have it again.  She said having multiples would just up the risk even more.  I would be VERY concerned about being pregnant with twins... let alone triplets after talking to our peri about prom.  If your peri said something different, nevermind.  They don't know why I had prom, but they think it was from an infection also.

It really is a personal decision though.  With everything there are risks.  Good luck with everything.

  • I took clomid, had multiple eggs and still ended up with a singleton. I would have been happy with twins but triplets would have scared me too. The odds are probably slim that you'll actually end up with triplets but I think your RE just wants you to be prepared. Good luck with whatever you and DH decide.
