1st Trimester

How many u/s(s) do you get?

I think I get one at 13 weeks, 20 weeks and then you don't have another one until 41 weeks....serioulsy....I don't get to see what is going on from week 20 to week 41...that is nutty. My 1st time pregnancy paranoia is going to go nuts.

Re: How many u/s(s) do you get?

  • At every visit. I have had 3 so far.  Many doctors only do 1 the whole 9 months though.

  • Are you serious?

Most people get one.  You won't go nuts because you will feel kicks constantly that will reassure you.

Usually if people are getting more u/s 's than they are because of complications not because "OH EM GEE, I wanna see my babbbby".

someecards.com - I support Newt Gingrich's idea of colonizing the moon if it'll help me get away from Newt Gingrich.

My baby is two!!! Baby girl 9/17/09

My other baby is still a baby! Baby Boy 11-30-11

  • I am high risk so I have already had 10 u/s and I am only 9 weeks.

My MFM will be seeing me and giving me an u/s every week until I am out of first tri due to the fact that we just lost two of the babies I was carrying.

  • It makes me feel better that you will have the kicks to let you know everything is ok. I am just a worry wart and was wondering how would you know all is a-ok if you don't take a peak inside for 5 months.

This made me spit out my water.  I totally agree.

  • you really don't want that many u/s.

  • I was told I get 4 or 5 if everything seems normal.

I got 1 at 7 weeks, getting another at 12, one more at 16, one more at 20 I think, and a last one in 3rd trimester.

  • Not to be mean...because I know how you are feeling and being pregnant for the first time is scary, but honestly, even with a million ultrasounds, you don't always know for sure that everything is "ok in there".  Sometimes babies are born with complications that didn't show up prenatally.  So you can't spend your whole life worrying about things that could possibly go wrong.

When you can feel kicks you do start to relax more :) That is until you start worrying about kick counts...lol.  Then when the baby gets here, you start worrying if they are eating enough, gaining enough weight, meeting milestones on time, etc.  Parenting is full of things to worry about :)

Just try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy :) I wish I wasn't such a worrier throughout my whole pregnancy, I would've enjoyed it alot more! I am a major "type A" personality, like to have control of everything, but one thing being a mom has taught me is that you are really in control of very little in life!

  • I only got one at 10 weeks for dating purposes, but besides that they usually wait til around 20 weeks. Later on I will be getting a few to check positioning and all that good stuff closer to 40 weeks.

  • The vast majority of babies are fine, even if you don't have u/s very often. I had two with my DS, and besides a dating one next week, am guessing I'll only have one more with this one.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • My insurance covers 1 u/s. They only way I can have more u/s is if (1) the OB deems it medically necessary or (2) I pay for it out-of-pocket.
  • You get more than some - some only get 1 u/s.  At every appointment from 12 weeks on you'll OB will use the doppler to listen to the heartbeat so you'll know everything is OK.

I get one at 8 weeks and then 20 weeks.  More if it is necessary.  With DS I also had one at 24 weeks because they saw something abnormal at the 20 week u/s and I got one at 37 for a growth u/s because I was measuring small and they wanted to make sure everything was ok.

  • I had 9 last time, but 7 of them were while I was on bedrest in the hospital for 3 weeks, to make sure baby was still growing. I will probably have a lot this time, bc I am considered high risk. But normally I think they may only do 1-2.

  • I'll have at least two (dating one at 7 weeks) and the big u/s. Last time around I had GD so I had two more later on to check her growth.
  • I think my insurance only covers 2 routine ultrasounds and then I just did the NT scan this past week. But, I enrolled in a research study on fetal growth - I now get 6 ultrasounds for free. Of course, those aren't clinical ultrasounds so they in no way give me information on how my pregnancy is going...they just measure everything. But, the are very relaxed and fun. It seems like the others have been very rushed (probably for good reason - they have a lot to do).
  • I'm really surprised that no one has really flamed you for this yet. I've seen lots of similar posts where high risk moms flame away when people complain about not getting more than a couple u/s.

I'm high risk and I will get at least 4 due to the dating scan, NT scan, a fetal echocardiogram, and the big 20 week u/s. I understand what you're saying but you will feel kicks and get to hear the heart beat at every appointment, so its not like you'll have no idea if the baby is okay.

  • I've had 1 already, I have one set for next week and then another at 20ish weeks to determine the sex...so 3 or 4, maybe.
  • Typically my OB does the optional NT scan at 12 weeks and then the big u/s at 20 weeks.  So 2.

I did have an early one this time around due to my last pregnancy ending in miscarriage.

  • I got one at 6 weeks and I'll get one at 20 weeks. My doctor also discussed doing more towards the end of the pregnancy because I had pre-term labor with DS and was on bedrest for two weeks, etc. but the standard in their office doesn't include any after 20 weeks.
  • At this point it looks like 2.  Barring any complications.

  • I suffer from IF, cysts and am high risk.

    Pregnancy #1 I had 5.

Pregnancy #2 I had 4 by the time I lost the baby at 9weeks.

This time around I will have at least 4 if not more.

Most people only get 1 at 20 weeks.
