1st Trimester

Confused...

I recently posted on TTC Boards.  Pretty much everyone that responded said to post here.

Here is the reason, I took a HPT on Monday (i'm due for my period on Saturday), i thought I saw a faint line but again thought maybe my mind was playing tricks on me.  I had a physical that day and my physician took a serum pregnancy test.  She called me the next evening to tell me that the pregnancy test came back at 16 which is low to be careful with what I do beacuse I could be pregnant.  I'm assuming she meant be careful like with alochol stuff like that.  I am going to retest on Saturday morning to see. I obviously hope that I am pregnant at this point but know that it is TOO early to tell anyone..what should I do about that.  Also, when would we be able to hear the heart beat?  Plus I'm anxious because if I am pregnant I'm su pposed to get together with some girlfriends this weekend for drinks..obviously I'm not going to drink but I have NO idea what to tell them why since I think it's too early to tell them just yet....help please and thank you!

Re: Confused...

  • I don't understand why your doctor doesn't know if you are pregnant or not from a blood test. I would take another test in the morning or maybe call another doctor. GL.

  • You're pregnant.  Congrats
  • If the blood test levels were too low to confirm a pregnancy and you haven't missed your period, but you think might be pregnant then the Dr. is going to tell you to act as if you are until a more definitive answer can be confirmed.

I would tell your friends you got put on antibiotics at your physical so no alcohol.

  • I'd retest and get a different doc.  Sounds like you are pregnant-- Congrats.

You may hear the heartbeat as early as 10 or 11 weeks but your doc's protocol for that stuff may vary from my doc's practices.

As for what to tell your friends-- if you don't want to tell the truth, why can't you just politely decline?

  • Any level of hcg means you are pregnant, congrats! My best guess as to why the nurse gave you a maybe is that if your levels are that low, that may mean that it is so early that the egg possibly hasn't even implanted yet (and my understanding is that there is a ~50-70% chance of implantation). GL!
  • A 16 probably means that you are pregnant!  Congrats!  My midwife says anything over a 10 is considered pregnant.  We had the same issue you had not wanting to tell too early (we had miscarried at 7 weeks before).  I went out one night with friends and just said I wasn't feeling very well and stuck with water all night.  It was actually true :-)  I was rediculous tired from the get go.  Also you may be able to see a heartbeat on an u/s as early as 6-7 weeks. Good luck!  Welcome to the 1st trimester boards!

  • I would call your OB.  They will have you come in and probably confirm it.
  • You're either pregnant or you're not. A line is a line. If you're really early on, it will be faint. Your doctor sounds a bit flaky; I'd be a bit concerned about that. I would say you're pregnant, but obviously, early on, which is why the line was so faint. Congrats!!

  • Thank you all for your helpful information.  I've obviously never been through this so I didn't want to assume and call my OBGYN and go in there and it be negative and I look silly.  I'll call today.  Thank you all again, and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy to everyone! =)

  • My first HPT was very faint as well, I took 3 before I actually believed the results. We thought I was probably 7 weeks when we went to the doctor, but I was actually 4w5d and that's why it was so faint on the HPT. Good luck and call your OB to schedule an appointment. Congrats and welcome to the 1st Trimester.
