Yes, seriously. Not very long - 20 minutes or so. It was in high school, another classmate, so yes I knew him.
The only long-term effect it has really had is not being able to watch hostage situations dramatized on TV. I have nightmares.
I feel much worse for what it must have done to my poor mom. She has seen the guy since then where she works and has to leave the room.
I used to have my ears pierced, but some whackjob lady that cut my hair when I was 12 tore the hole in left earlobe when she was viciously combing through my hair.
She told me to quit being a baby.

My grandfather changed our family's last name when they immigrated to Canada from Germany so that the KGB could not find them.
ETA: My gradfather was a Nazi and in WW2 fought against the russians and actually had his whole battalion killed except for him. He walked from Stalingrad to Berlin in the dead of winter and by the time her got back the war was over. He is an amazing man.

when my then fiance cheated on me and broke my itty bitty heart i went to the airport and and randomly picked a flight to get on. i told the guy helping me that i had $300 and needed to get away. there were specials to canada and i hopped on board.
i knew if i didn't get far away i would somehow be suckered into staying with this guy b/c i loved him so much. thank you canada for saving me from myself :P
