This is a pretty specialized question but I know there are a few who might be able to help me. ![]()
DS was approved for 1 hour a week of speech therapy through EI. The provider was supposed to start the first week of January but didn't start until the 15th. We had two sessions and realized that the provider's schedule and DS' schedule don't mesh and no one else at the provider's agency can do the schedule I think DS needs. So we were referred back to our county agency.
It's two work days before the end of the month, and DS has three sessions left on his monthly allotment. I asked if the hours could be moved to next month so that when we get a new person, DS can sort of cram to try to make some progress and my request was denied.
Is that normal? Is there anything I can do about it?
I'm really annoyed that because the provider is slacking (first in contacting us to begin with and then in referring us back to the county and now waiting for another match), DS isn't going to get the amount of services to which he is entitled.

Ours was based both on monthly and progress. When Sara went to a speech center if she missed a class we had to make it up within that month because the county would only alllow the speech center to bill what was alotted that month. So if she happend to be sick at the end of the month there was no way for us to make up those hours. If we had vacation planned we could do make ups anytime within that month.

I think it's probably normal, for us Andrew was given a weekly amount and that stays in place for 6 months at which point he will be re-evaluated. I'm pretty sure that I would have gotten the same response from our local EI as you did. Now he does get once a week through our insurance so that would probably be a different story.
I know for his developmental therapy session they totally slacked on getting it set up so we missed two weeks at the beginning of Nov. and then she took vacation the week of Christmas and New Years when we had sessions scheduled so we missed both of those weeks and there was no offer to reschedule, try to work us in.
I would call the head of your EI and complain to see if you can get those sessions added in but I wouldn't bet on it.
Thanks for the responses. C was approved for six months of therapy, one hour a week and I don't think we can make any of it up after the month ends it sounds like. So I think it's similar to your situation Janet. Grr. I wish I'd known that -- I would have pushed to have twice weekly sessions just this month with the original provider just to use them even though they aren't "working" well.
No ideas other than keep asking and pushing...
But thats super sucky I am sorry
