Speaking of where you live....

Living in Canada, in the Prairies, we get extremely cold temperatures here. Most winter days are about -20 C here (I think about -5 or something in F), but we do have the odd -50C (-58 F I think!), in fact a couple of weeks ago, Edmonton (about an hour away from me) was the second coldest place on the planet, next to Antarctica LOL. I guess we are used to th -20, but what do you Americans consider cold? I know that the Northern States get cold temperatures as well, are they similar to our temperatures? And I've always wondered, do you all think we're crazy for living up here in the winter!? LOL Just curious. :)

Re: Speaking of where you live....

  • I live in the south, so 30 degrees is cold to me. Sometimes I think I am crazy for living where it is so hot and humid in the summer!

  • I live in Ohio and it can get as cold as -15F with the wind chill, but mostly single digits and 20's/30's in the winter.
  • Well...I live in Miami,FL :) So the coldest it got here so far...is low 30s. Hehe. My parents however, live in NC and it got down to the single digits since they live close to a mountain. And once when I visited NYC it was 11 degrees outside with -6 wind chills >.< Too cold for my thin southern blood!

  • Wow - that's freezing.  I live in NC so once it drops below 50 I'm thinking about grabbing my scarf.  I love fall & spring where I live, not too hot, not too chilly! :) And yes, you are crazy for living there -- soo cold! I don't know how you stand it!! Haha! But if you like it, that's all that matters.
  • Honestly (and this may be because I've never lived anywhere else) it's hard for me to understand why ANYONE with a choice lives anywhere north of Virginia.

And IMO less than 40 degrees is cold.  40-60 is chilly.

Ha, very true. Sometimes we get heat waves in the summer where it will be over 100F for a couple of weeks. I'd say 90% of people don't have a/c here so we just die until it cools down! I always wonder how people live in really hot climates.

  • I live in central Wisconsin, and it's about 0 degrees F today (about -17C).  I can handle it ok until about 15-20 degrees (-5--10C), then I start complaining!  The wind chill is the worst!

I think I'm crazy for living as far north as Wisconsin (all of my and DH family is here, so we're staying!), so I definitely think Canadians are nutty ;)

  • I'm down in Massachusetts and a typical winter day for us is anywhere from 25-35 degrees.  At night it's usually around 20.  It can get way colder through.  It's not all that unusual to have nights in the negatives and days in the single digits.

  • I live on top of a mountain so temps here can get pretty cold in the winter.  I start to get miserable under 10 degrees.  Then again, I get miserable above 70 degrees, too. lol

  • I lived in Edmonton till about a month ago, now Im 4 hours away and its colder!
  • I guess we just live with it. I mean, we're not outside playing in the snow when its -50, but life doesn't stop. People work outside  in it, we drive in it, etc. It does call for some special precautions though, like travelling with warm clothes, blankets, making sure you wear proper winter clothes etc. Also, when it gets below -20, we open all of our subway stations and churches so that our homeless can stay warm at night. Otherwise, they would freeze to death in minutes.

Where are you living now? Up north? I'm in Sylvan Lake and even though we are south, we still seem to get the same temps are Edmonton. It sure it pretty outside now with all the snow though. :)

  • Northern IN, IL and Wisconsin get into the negative degrees very easily in the winter.

We had to move to Grande Prairie, because DH got laid off, and he got an awesome job offer here.Im hating it here though, there isn't even a decent book store, no babies'r'us , nothing. Ive been ordering everything online, books are cheaper on line though.

  • I'm in the deep, deep south down by the Gulf of Mexico and last week we got down to 6 degrees F.  All the water pipes broke and we had no running water for 5 days.  This was in our capital city.  I love cold weather but, that was a bit extreme.

  • I'm Canadian too! My sister used to live in Edmonton but currently is in Fort St. John, BC (hello Alaska and Yukon Territory). My other sister is in Prince George. I live in CT now, but I've lived in Vancouver BC, Bellingham WA, central NY, etc. Central NY is cold and CT can be too, but it's nothing compared to your temps and what my sisters deal with. My sister calls and tells me about her husband outside fixing things in -45 weather. That's insane.

A lot of people don't get that southern BC (Vancouver) is actually a really temperate, mild climate. My mom and much of my family are near Vancouver, and there isn't much snow to speak of. It's warmer and more temperate than CT. My dad lives in Ontario and has hotter summers than we do in CT. Everyone assumes that as soon as you cross the Canadian border it's suddenly cold and snowing. Erm, check out the latitudes people.

  • I am now in Alaska, so we get cold like you do, and before that I was in the mountains in Colorado and we had some nice  48 below 0 days. It can get pretty cold here.

Yep, GP is freezing! Have only been there a few times, but not my favorite place. Hope it gets better for you and you can find more to do!

Ya I lived on Vancouver Island for 20 years, born and raised. I miss it. The only thing is not seeing sun for 3 weeks in row, is depressing.

  • I live in Wisconsin as well (somehow there are quite a few Wisconsinites on here!) - in Milwaukee. It can get below zero fairly easily. The wind chill this morning was two below with the actual temperature at 9. I hate the cold, but am stuck here as my stepson's mom is here so we'll be here at least another 15 years. I'd head back to the south in a minute if I could!

I love Vancouver Island. Its so beautiful and a very mild climate! Lots of rain though, but it is very beautiful :)

  • I'm in Georgia, so anything below 40 is too cold for me!

My parents both grew up in Canada (Dad - Brandon, Manitoba, Mom - Slave Lake area).  My mom lived in Edmonton when she was in her 20's, and she was just telling me about the coldest winter she ever experienced.  She said it was -97 F - that was back before Canada switched over to metric.  It was so cold that the oil pan heaters couldn't heat the cars enough, the diesel fuel congealed, and the wires for the electric buses had hoar frost on them and couldn't make a connection.  I wouldn't be able to make it if I lived somewhere that cold.

  • northern Maine. We've hit -40 F before... mostly at night, and I don't think that's happened this year fortunately... But we do get below zero F on a regular basis. Lately it's been in the +20 degrees F range.

  • I live in TO so it never really gets "cold" here.  Today was only -6 (20) and last week was above 0 (30s) the whole time.  I'm used to Cottage Country when we didn't have indoor recess at school until it was -30 (-20s) or lower.  I think you Albertans are a bit of a tougher breed.  I don't know how I'd handle -50 days.  Up to about -25, I'm ok (with the necessary clothing choices), but -50?  Brrrrrr.....

LOL. I totally remember freezing at recess! I loved it when they finally said it was indoor, but you're right, it wouldn't  be until its at least -25 C. The -50 well its not fun, but its doable. Like I said before, we definitely don't stay out and play in the snow! LOL

  • I live in southern california so anything below 60 F is freezing cold to me :(
  • last summer was extra crazy hot in Austin, so I remember it "feeling good" on the days where the highs were only in the 90s....let's hope it's not that bad this summer!

  • I live in Texas where most of the summer is 100+ If were lucky it might get down to 85 at night. DH and I don't have AC either. You learn tricks to keep cool in heat like that. I think by next summer we may have to find a place with AC because I don't think the baby will stand the heat like we do.

  • I am such a cold WIMP.  I love hot, summer weather.  When it's in the 50's F here, I feel like it's chilly out and need a hat because otherwise I get a migraine.

I am simply not made for cold weather climates.

  • we're such weenies. i grew up in dallas where it actually would get pretty cold. one year we had a sudden freeze where temperatures went down to 10 degrees and our honeysuckle froze solid. now we live in the bay area and i can't stand it when it gets down to the forties. part of the problem is that we've been living in old farmhouses that just don't have very good insulation and no central heating. that makes a huge difference.

my sister lives in chicago these days, so yeah, i know how lucky we are.

  • I live in CA- so anything below 35F is too darn cold for me!
  • Born & raised in Southern CA...I don't think I could function in below freezing temps. Our mountains covered in snow are still pretty warm compared to the temps being listed.
