1st Trimester

Does anyone know much about Betas?

I had blood drawn on Monday due to spotting and then heavier than normal bleeding.  I received my results today and they are 18,606.  That seems extremely high for 5 weeks (based on my LMP) and I can't seem to get a straight answer from the internet or my doctor as they have 2 seconds to talk to me.  I know as long as they are doubling it is the most important thing but can anyone give some more insight?   I go in tomorrow for the next round of blood tests.  TIA!

Re: Does anyone know much about Betas?

  • Your betas honestly mean nothing until they take the second set.  They can be high and have a normal pregnancy and they can be really low and have a normal pregnancy.  My first set was 73 or something really low and I was 3.5 weeks or so.

  • As long as your numbers are doubling, yes, that's great. If the numbers are that high this early on it COULD point to a twin pregnancy, but with some women the levels rise dramatically regardless. It could be that you are earlier in the pregnancy than you originally thought (even 2 days can make a HUGE difference in your hCG levels). The only thing I can say definitively is that as long as your numbers are nice and high, then your pregnancy sounds like it's going along smoothly. Once you get your results from tomorrow, that will be the real judgement point. I wish I could tell you more, but there are so many different answers I could give and they all are vastly different.

  • Thank for everyone's replies.  I just can't seem to get a straight answer but it appears there is no straight answer.   I had all but given up on this pregnancy after the bleeding (which the doc confirmed was too much to be normal) so I thought maybe the high numbers were a good sign. I guess I have to wait unitl Friday for the results.

Ps. LaurLaur - do you live in Long Island City?  I am moving there this weekend.  Can't wait!!

Yes I do! It is so amazing- you will love it. Where are you moving from?

I live in Manhattan now.  We are moving to one of the high rises by the water.  I am so excited.  We are getting twice the space for a fraction more AND it is actually closer to both mine and my husband's jobs.

  • Did not realize you had bleeding earlier. With my last pregnancy I woke up bleeding TONS. Everyone was sure I was mc.  My son is now 1.  I had a subchorionic bleed.  It was watched closely and I bled off and on but in the end it did not cause any problem.  Did they do an ultrasound since you were bleeding.

They did.  I went in for an emergency ultra sound on Monday.  I probably should have mentioned that in my first post.  The ultra sound was inconclusive.  It may or may not be ectopic.  It may or may not be a miscarriage. And I might be fine.  I am in limbo right now and have been posting like crazy just looking for some hope.  I was hoping my high betas was a good sign but it sounds like Friday's results are all that matters. The only other good thing is I am not cramping at all. I have even been researching vanishing twin syndrome in the hopes it could be something as unlikely as that.  The waiting is killing me and I am having a hard time working.

Thank you for your story.  That does give me hope and I am so happy your son is healthy.  When did you start the bleeding? I have been spotting since my BFP which turned heavier on Sunday night and is now off and on.

  • I was acually 12 weeks but other women on here during my first pregnancy had the same thing earlier on in their pregnancies.  My dr said it can happen at any time.  T&P for you and your little one.

  • I feel like I'm not getting answers to my beta questions either. At 6 weeks, my beta was 89,000! Now, the nurse on the phone didn't seem worried at all. I guess we'll see!

Its just so frustrating. I just wanted you to know that someone is just as frustrated as you. GL!

  • HcG can have a VERY WIDE range... At 7.5 weeks, mine was 229,000 and they thought my dates were off.  Come to find out, all was fine i just happen to be someone who has very high HcG levels when pregnant (UGH, because that means extreme m/s).

Here is a site i used that told me "normal" ranges:
