Do I need a bottle warmer???

Need some advice from experienced moms....

I plan on breastfeeding, but would like to introduce a bottle within the first few months since I will be going back to work after 15 weeks. Some have told me not to get baby used to warm milk and just give her cold breastmilk from the fridge. I feel like that won't work since my body is already warm and that is what she'll be used to.

Should I buy the bottle warmer now.....microwave is out of the question, correct?

Thanks for the advice!

  • I think it's a matter of personal preference but I love ours, as does DS! We're in the same situation as you and DS does not like cold milk. I suppose you could try and just buy the bottle warmer after the fact if you need it. You'll be running out to Target all the time, no matter how prepared you think you are. Wink

  • I BF and pump and I don't use a bottle warmer but I don't give it cold from fridge either.  If refridgerated or frozen I warm it to room temp.  I use hot water from the tap or in a bowl for this and spin the bottle in the warm water.  Its pretty quick.  I never got a bottle warmer because I thought it was a waste and I saw some bad reviews as well that they create hot spots etc.  If I've pumped with intention to use in the next few hours then I will just leave it out.

ditto this.  I never give it cold because it separates in the fridge, but I always warm it in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes, and swirl it around to mix it back up.

  • MIcrowave is not good for the milk itself but you can use it to warm a bowl of water to stick the bottle in.  I would wait on buying this since you are not planning to give a bottle immediately anyway and you will find out if you really need one along with many other things like pp said.

  • I just heat water in a cup in the microwave and put the bottle in the cup of hot water to warm it. All of my kids spit up more with cold milk, so I always warm.

So my vote is no, you do need a bottle warmer. In my experience, the bottle warmers are really slow anyways. It takes much less time for me to do it with hot water.

  • We give expressed milk fairly cold. We warm it just enough to take the edge off and swirl the milk back together. That way we are never stuck somewhere and unable to warm the bottle, she already takes it cold or room temp.

  • I have only ever used bottles here and there to supplement but I never warmed them.  I wanted to be able to make a bottle anywhere and found it easier if baby was not used to having to have it warmed.
  • I got one as a gift and took it back a couple weeks ago because no one ever used it oce we had to start using bottle. Warm water works just fine. I don't know why you would not warm it up though. My DD will not take it cold. Anyways I would say save money and space and skip the bottle warmer.

  • DS takes breastmilk cold from a bottle.  I do swish it around to mix it back together.  I did it the first time by accident then asked hte ped about it, and there is no nutritional value to warming it, and the ped said to consider myself lucky that ds takes it cold..it makes life easier, he never really ate from teh breast so he has never had it "warm"
  • I love our bottle warmer.  I EP'd with DS and used it all the time.  This time I am EBF but offering a bottle every so often.  It warms the bottle so much faster than letting it sit in the sink.  Too me it was just much more efficient.
