When I went to my dr. a few weeks ago, she talked about the 30% rule. Pregnant women with asthma go in one of these, a) 30% gets better, b) 30% stays the same and c) 30% gets worse. I've noticed in the last week and half I'm having a harder time breathing and my anxiety is worse. They put me on a nebulizer at home to make sure the baby and I are getting enough oxygen. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Re: Asthma and Anxiety Increasing
Mine's about the same as before, but I do get winded more quickly. I'm on Singulair and Zyrtec to control my asthma and allergies. I would really prefer to come off of them, but if I come off of either one, I find myself gasping for breath within days. They are both category B drugs, so they should be safe, although there is always a risk. I hear you on the anxiety though... I feel like my asthma symptoms get worse when I start to get worried about becoming out of breath, which I worry more about now that I'm pregnant. I'm sure your OB has it under control, but if you feel like you're gasping for breath, I would be concerned about the levels of oxygen the baby is getting. Maybe consider going on a drug like Singulair? I know no one wants to be on meds during pregnancy, but I know for me, it's the lesser of two evils. Obviously the possible oxygen deficiency is more of an issue, and generally category B drugs are considered safe for pregnant women. Hopefully the nebulizer is working for you and you can avoid further medication. I use albuterol when I feel like I'm starting to go downhill a bit, and it's safe for the baby if used according to directions.
i have asthma too. this pg, i have not noticed any changes yet. but i am on singulair (miracle drug for me!) this pg, and was not with last pg.
last time, i was on 3 different inhalers & used them multiple times/day. my asthma got progressively worse - especially as baby grew & compressed my lungs. however, it never got so bad that i had to go on oral steroids or be hospitalized.
i was also worried about having probs w/ my asthma during labor & my providers told me they had never had anyone need treatment during labor - but i did end up needing oxygen during the last few pushes.
all that said, i would talk w/ your ob/midwife - and PCP or pulmonologist - about coming up with a new plan for managing your asthma during pg. i swear the singulair has been like magic for me and dd!
good luck to you!
