Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you try to "trick" you LO into eating certain foods?

I guess I don't really mean by hiding foods, because we hide sweet potatoes in mac-n-cheese all the time.  But MIL constantly will use different words for foods to get D to eat them - the other day at dinner she kept asking D if he wanted a "treat" and then she'd give him broccoli (which he hates and has never eaten).  I guess I just don't see the point in calling a food something it isn't - maybe it will change as he gets older and I'll want him to eat more?!

  • DS wasn't a fan of green bean or peas when we were on purees so I woudl mix it with pears or applesauce and he would eat it. He still doesn;t like peas, but he loves green beans now. I plan on doing thins with other foods when he gets older and decices to be really picky to be independent.

  • Sounds like you have an issue with your MIL, I don't see anything wrong with calling broccoli a treat. She is not lying to him, maybe to some it is a treat and heck she is getting your kid to eat a veggie he never has and you are complaining?

We do lie to DD sometimes, but we don't have to lie to DS he is a world class eater.

  • Ha! I do this sometimes and try to tell him that his veggie purees are yogurt. It only works about 50% of the time. His babysitter mixes crushed crackers in with his green beans to get him to eat them. Also, funny story is that one of my friend's was told that crackers were cookies until she was 6 and figured it out on her own Crying

  • Luckily, we haven't had this issue with DD. Even the foods that she has absolutely refused to eat, she loves. I just give it time and she starts to like them.

LOL,  no she didn't get him to eat it, he immediately spit it out.  It didn't fool him for a second.

Well then the joke is on her, still would not bother me though, she is not trying to be mean or really "trick" him..

  • I was interested in buying the deceptively delicious cookbook or something similar to make dishes for DD that were packed with veggies, but than thought it wasn't a good thing because she wouldn't know what veggies are and that they are good for you.  Now I've decided that since she already loves veggies that it will still be good to know recipes with lots of good stuff in them in addition to what she eats for finger food veggies.

So I don't think its cool to only cook that way for LO and they should definitely know what veggies are and have tons of them.  Then again, DD is a great eater..it might be different if she refused broccoli..I don't really know what to think about the broccoli=treat thing yet..kinda weird..and like you said I don't think it even works..they are smarter than most people think!

Last night DD had carrots, peas, and sweet potato on her tray and I let her eat what she wanted..she didn't want the carrots, but that was ok..
