Who is using bumpers?

With DS i used a regular bumper, never heard anything about the breathable bumpers. I did try without the bumper for DS when he started moving around in his crib but then he kept getting his legs stuck in the bars and loosing his paci's. so it went back in very quick. So just wondering if anyone uses regular bumpers anymore or just the breathable ones cause that seems to be all i'm hearing about, and if you used breatheable bumpers did you just buy the crib bedding seperate? Thanks

Re: Who is using bumpers?

  • Breathable.  With DS, we bought a bedding set and MIL made the bumpers into valances.

  • I will not be using a bumper. Mostly b/c they can be a risk, and also b/c  I am cheap and don't feel like spending the money it.

  • No bumpers in the begining. We might add a breathable bumper when she starts to move if it becomes a problem.

But there is zero purpose to having a bumper in the begining when they can't move. Not worth the risk IMO.

  • Used a regular with DD, and will with this one as well.

  • I use nothing in the crib but a sheet.    I've never had issues - if either of the girls got (get) their limbs stuck, I "unstuck" them.  If they drop a paci, I pick it up and clean it off.   If we more issues, maybe I'd consider one, but I'm way too paranoid about suffocation.

  • I was interested to hear from my pediatrician that the only documented risk to bumpers is from getting caught in them (if they're not tied on tight enough) and strangling.  Or if it's really stiff, stepping on it when they're older and launching themselves out of the crib.  He said there is no evidence that babies have ever suffocated with one.  That's the thing about SIDS, they don't really know why the baby stopped breathing.  Apparently they've never linked a suffocation to a bumper.

But it's a personal choice.  If you'd worry about it then it might not be worth it.
