Baby Names

-son names for a girl

Absolutely no offense to those of you with -son names for a girl (Addison, etc), but I don't think I could name a daughter something ending in -son. My reasoning is this: any name with this suffix generally means "son of __." Ex: Ellison = son of Ellis. I just think it's funny that our culture has latched onto so many of these names and made them girl names. JMO.

    What about Alison/Allison?

It is my understanding that Allison/Alison is a derivative of Alice. So, I'll let that one slide. ;)

You know, I was curious, so I looked it up, and Allison actually means "Son of the Noble one" and was originally a boy name.

    Madison is "son of Matthew".

    Ellison is "son of Elias"

Addison, strangel enough, is listed as "child (not son) of Adam"

    Interesting.

  • I've heard of Emerson for a girl  I personally like it for a boy, but you could call her Emmy...

Yay!  That's the name we're gonna use!  I like some of the -son names, but there are getting to be some odd ones out there.

"Madison" started being used as a girl's name after the movie "Splash," when Darryl Hannah (and what a crazy first name she has!!) called herself that after "Madison Avenue."

  • I was going to make this exact post earlier today!!!

It annoys me when people suggest -son names for my daughter. I don't want my daughter to be "son of" anything. No offence to those Greyson lovers out there.

  • Totally agree with you. I don't like -son names for boys either though except for Jason.

No offense taken Smile. I guess I don't really take notice to -son names, especially with all of the Madisons, Allisons...etc. I just like the nn Gray ever since Jennifer Garner's movie Catch and Release. Her name in the movie was Gray (not sure if there was a longer name...). I just can't stand the spelling of Gracen/Gracyn and can't think of any other name to take it from (I don't like Grace as a fn). To each his own.

Haven't seen the movie, but the nn Gray is pretty cute. I have to admit, I am a fan of "color" names - Gray/Grey, Violet, Charlotte, etc.

  • I totally agree with you. Plus -son names are way too trendy.

  • I could not agree more with the OP.
