rice in milk

anyone putting rice or cereal in their breast milk at night for longer sleep time? i'm really getting tempted!!! i'm so sleep deprived that i think at this point its just best for me and the baby.

what brand are you using and are you using rice or cereal?

Re: rice in milk

  • No and I would discourage you from doing it.  The AAP and WHO recommend that babies only have breastmilk or formula until 6 months, no food or cereal before that.  Babies are born with underdeveloped gastro-intestinal tracks at it matures aroudn 4-6 months.  Having cereal before that (unless needed for a medical condition) can cause constipation and an upset stomach which will lead to more night wakings.  BTW, I know someone who has tried it and their LO doesn't sleep any longer with the cereal in the bottle.

Ditto this.  It's also a choking hazard to put rice cereal in a bottle.  Hang in there.  Your little guy will be sleeping longer stretches before you know it!

ok ok.. i'm really going to go out of my mind! he has some good nights and loads of bad nights. i mean, at 3 months he should NOT be waking up every 3 hours ;(

  • Up until a few weeks ago, mine was waking every 3 hours, sometimes sooner.  It's completely normal.  She's slowly getting better.  We usually get one 5 hour stretch now, though last night was bad, and she was up every 2-3 hours again.  It's hard, but you just kind of have to stick it out.  I agree- don't put rice in the bottle.
  • I read Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and it helped me.  I wanted to wait til 6 mo. to start cereal, but was really tempted to try it at 4 mo. when the pedi approved it to see if DS would sleep longer.  Luckily I read the book and now he is sleeping longer so it looks like I will make my goal of waiting til 6 mo. to introduce solids :)
  • The PPs are right, and studies have shown that rice and cereal do not help with sleeping.  Furthermore, at this age, babies should not sleep for extremely long stretches.  Yes, perhaps starting to resettle themselves, but Dr. Sears thinks it's a survival mechanism against SIDS that babies don't sleep to soundly so they're easily aroused if there are problems (like not enough fresh oxygen).  Yes, it's horrible for mom & dad if they cry out, but at least you have a healthy baby.

Do you co-sleep?  I found myself getting a ton more sleep once I brought DD into my bed (although at your LO's age you might want to do a side-car style).
