Parents who work late, bedtime routine?

I am a nurse and work 12 hour shifts... two nights a week I don't get home until quarter to 8. DH works until 5 every day.

We are trying to move up our bedtime routine, because DS has stopped STTN, and is getting overtired with his current bed time (9 or 10pm).

If you or DH works late hours, does one of you put LO to bed before the other gets off work? I would be sad to get off work and not see him, but he is sleeping so poorly I want to do what's best for him.

also, if I want to move his bedtime up, what is the best way to do this? We currently do bath, lotion, read, nurse, bed.

TIA :)

Re: Parents who work late, bedtime routine?

  • DH is in the middle of mandatory overtime, which makes him pretty late.  If DS is showing me he can't stay up, as much as it sucks, I will put him to bed before DH gets home.

Our routine is short.  We do diaper, lotion, pjs, bottle, goodnight kiss, crib.

  • sadly, yes. we realized it wasn't fair to keep ds up just so dh could see him for 15 minutes. so most nights, ds is in bed or at least getting ready to go down by the time dh is home.
  • I let DS take a small 10 min nap around 8:30.  Then he'll be in bed by 10 we do bath, book, boob, bed.  We do this or Dh would never get to spend time with him.  With this being said he never sttn but he only wakes up once a night, he usually sleeps 10-9:30.  Good luck.

  • My daughter likes to go to bed anywhere from 8:30- 9:30, but some nights my husband doesn't get home until 9 or 9:30. If she's tired I won't keep her up to see him, but we will try and wait if she has any juice left in her. Though, I'm thinking my husband might be starting to prefer that I put her down then, since it's not so fun for me to have her see him for 10 mins and then disappear to put her to sleep. He gets to see her if (and unfortunately she does this often) she wakes up and doesn't go back down. She also occasionally wakes up with him in the am (7:00) and then goes back to sleep after he leaves. We are trying to be flexible!
