Babies: 3 - 6 Months

BFing/EPing question (STTN)

What do you do if your baby STTN?  I am an EPer, pump approx every 4-5 hours.

I pump around 11-11:30pm-ish.

I set my alarm for 4:30am and pump.

Baby wakes up 8ish and I pump then.

But - there are nights I have overslept because I hit snooze on my alarm.  Like last night, I overslept til 6:30am and my boobs hurt so bad and my shirt was totally soaked (through my nursing bra and super thick nursing pads).  Will I always be totally uncomfy and engorged if I go past 5 hours?  What if I were BFing, my body wouldn't adjust to the baby STTN?

Re: BFing/EPing question (STTN)

  • When DS started STTN it took my body a few days to adjust. The body just adjusts. Like it adjusted back to saying goodbye to my STTN baby.

  • I don't pump overnight and I only leak if I sleep later than usual (like on the weekends).  It just takes a few days for your body to adjust

  • I BF, and up until Wed night, DS was STTN before hitting what i think is the 4mo wakeful, a little early...

DS usually slept from about 10 - 8, but FI gets up at 5.45am for work. His alarm usually nudges me up (even if it's on vibrate, inside FI's pillowcase), and then the boob pain kicks in and WAKES ME UP. Then, I'll get up to pump for about 20-30 mins/boob and head back to bed.

I'm trying to build up a stash for our honeymoon, so I'll feel guilty if I ignore the pain, anyway. Smile

  • I EBF and your body does adjust to the STTN thing. DD STTN for the most part, some nights she will wake up once during the night for a feeding but sometimes not. The nights that she doesn't wake up, I am pretty full when she wakes up in the morning and sometimes if she doesn't have a long feeding first thing I will pump for a few minutes on each side afterwards just to help empty it more. But some mornings I wake up and I'm fine, it just depends on how long she sleeps usually.

  • I BF but if I wake up and am uncomfortable I will pump.  But usually I try to go back to sleep.  We are at a stage where somoetimes she sleeps a 6 hr stretch and sometimes it is still every few hrs.  I tell myself if I can sleep - to sleep!  Think about it this way - people used to BF without pumps and their bodies adjusted bc they had no other choice.
  • i bf, but if ds is sleeping - i sleep.  whenever he starts sleeping longer i am engorged for a few days but then my supply regulates.
