What do you do when they don't want to eat??

We are trying to stay on a schedule (which has worked out pretty well when they stay on it0

5:00am (they usually wake up to eat)

8am (they wake up but don't want to eat)

11am - 2pm- 5pm - 8pm.(all good feedings)

Now they are sleeping until 6am sometimes... and even if they eat at 5 at 8 they don't want to eat... How do you stay on schedule when they wake up at a later time (I want them to sleep longer so I am definitely not waking them up at 5 to eat)?  Is it okay to skip the 8am feeding and just go to 11:00am?  What about when they get hungry at 9:30? how do you get them on schedule again....

Thanks!

  • I wouldn't so much go by a schedule based on the clock, I would do it based on the house that day (so if they eat every 3 hours, it might be different times on different days, but still spaced the same).  That's what I did for DS1 and it worked well.

  • I should mention we try to follow baby wise...  We have found that when they have a consisten bedtime and feeding schedule they are happier.. the days we just go by hours between feeding things get a little hectic... maybe I am the one that needs the schedule lol.  thanks for your input though :)
  • we do babywise too. if they woke up early then i just stalled them (paci) until i wanted them to get up (if it wasnt too far away). so you pick the time you want them to get up (thats reasonable of course) and go from there. we do 7am, if they get up before that they just have to wait. the last few days they have been sleeping in a little longer to 7:30. i then adjust all the day feedings so that we still end at the same time each night (8:30) so it may be 3 hrs between, or it may be 3.5, but never more then that (they get cranky). so i would stall them to skip that 5am feeding, which they are prob doing out of habit at this point and get them to that 7:30, 8am feeding, which they would then be hungry for. i hope that helps. • Ditto pp- I would just adjust the feedings all day so that the bedtime feeding was at the right time, so feed a little early one or two times or a little later if they don't seem especially hungry. It's a pain but it works out eventually & I agree- the bedtime feeding time is the most important, for us- I have found that even if the daycare feeds our LOs late (we ask them to feed b/w 3 & 4 so we can do our bedtime feeding b/w 630 & 7 but sometimes they don't feed til after 4 if they're napping or whatever), they still eat well at that bedtime feeding, I think b/c they're used to it & know it is the last one for a while.
  • They might be ready to go 4 hrs. My boys switched to 4-hr feeding cycles (on their own) at 2 months.

  • Thanks guys.  They were going 4 hours but we have found the sleep better at night if they go 3 hours.. the eat more during the day and don't wake up in the very early am
