Why do you have to store BM bags horizontally?

I just read on the post below this one that you are supposed to store BM bag horizontally in a chest freezer. Why is that? Also, when I do pump I freeze in 5 oz Medela bags and they only hold 5 oz if they are standing up right? the bottom of them like flares out so they stand up.

Re: Why do you have to store BM bags horizontally?

  • They don't need to be laid flat - but it makes storing more easy to organize and uses less space.  I realized this after freezing a large amount of my BM in the Medela bags without laying them flat.  I've switched to Lansinoh bags and I have been able to make far better use of space in my freezer.

  • I use the Medela bags and found that placing them in ice cube holders alternating 1 upright, 1 upside down etc saves tons of space. The ice cube holders can then be stacked- the Lansinoh bags once frozen were too tall to fit in the holders. We had a chest freezer and this was the easiest way for me to keep everything organized.

  • Just an fyi you might want to store in smaller amounts, like 3oz b/c once you thaw it you have to use it w/ in 24hrs.
  • What I read is that Lansinoh recommends this to prevent leakage for some reason. We've only defrosted one bag from my stash and it leaked. It had been stored vertically, so I'm just being careful.
  • i stored vertically with my first child and so far i am with my second.   never an issue really.
  • I use the lansinoh bags and freeze them horiz then stand them up. After I get a bunch of loose bags I put a bunch in a freezer ziplock according to a date span and mark that on the ziplock bag so I can use them in order and it also condenses them.
