We just started TTC and I am already paranoid about picking the perfect name! Hubby is born and raised in Ireland and we both decided it would be nice to honor his heritage when naming our baby. The only problem with this is that we live in the US and I don't want our child to have to explain their name at every introduction. I really like the name Aisling. I think the traditional Irish pronounciation is ASH-ling, but it can also be pronounced ASH-lin. I like the latter.

Re: Spelling of an Irish name....
I've heard it pronounced Ashlin and Ashleen.
ETA: Ok that was not your question at all lol! I'd spell it the traditional way. Aisling.
My cousin is Aisling. Both her parents are from Ireland, but she grew up here. The name Aisling was on our short list, so I had a long talk with cousin Aisling about her experiences with her name. She said people often mis-pronounced it the first time they saw it in writing, but it normally only took one time to correct them (and provide a brief history of the name since people were rarely familiar with it) until they got it right. She always had to spell her name for people, but was never annoyed by that. The toughest times were in the bars in college when she'd introduce herself to a guy & he would think she said "Ashley" because the music was so loud. She said depending on how cute the guy was she'd decide to correct him or not. LOL!
Bottom line she was glad her parents gave her the traditional spelling. In her opinion it would have "cheapened" the value of having a traditional Irish name if the spelling was an Americanized version.

I'd just stick with the traditional spelling as well.
How cool that "Ash" could be a NN.. I just think it sounds cool.

Aisling is DH's top choice for a girl! We were thinking about it for DD, but I changed my mind about a month before she was born. I just didn't LOVE it.
We have chosen another traditional Irish name this time around that we will spell the traditional way.
BUT in trying to compromise on Aisling I threw out spelling it Aislinn and pronouncing it ash-leen.....also very pretty!
