3rd Trimester

Is it to early to wash and put away clothes?

I need to wash all of DD#1's clothes that I'm reusing for this baby.. Now that I have her room all set up I'd like to get those clothes out of the garbage bags they're in and washed! But if they sit in a dresser for the next 8-11wks will they smell stale when ready for use? I know this is probably a silly question but I'm just wondering...

Re: Is it to early to wash and put away clothes?

  • I would go ahead and start washing.  They shouldn't smell stale, imo.

  • I'd probably wait just a bit longer.  I don't think they'll smell stale at all, but they may get dusty or whatnot, even just sitting in a drawer.

  • Not a stupid question at all!  I'm in the same boat.  I have them all organized by 0-3, etc. but I plan to wash everything next weekend...so 35 weeks.

  • I washed all of my little boy's clothes as we got them (basically from about 20 weeks on) and they didn't smell funny when we started using them. If you have the energy, do it now!
  • i say if you feel motivated, do it!
  • i've already done this. :) i thought about that too but i think it'll be okay since they are in the dresser. i may wash the crib sheet again...in case any dust settled on it?

i've always been a planner & want to make sure most everything is done...

  • I think you should be ok going ahead and doing it. It'll be one less last-minute thing to do. Maybe you could leave the dresser drawers slightly open to keep things from getting stuffy. But I never need to rewash anything that I haven't worn in 8-11 weeks for it to smell fresh to me.

  • I've started washing some things.  I was worried about that too and then my mom pointed out that I have items that hang in my closet and sit in my drawers for months without wearing and they don't get dusty or stale.  I thought that sounded reasonable so I've started washing and putting away and I feel sooooo much better to have things organized!!!

    this.

  • Heaven's no!  It's not too early to wash and put away things.  I was doing a while back, probably before I hit 29 weeks.  Happy folding!
  • If you're worried about "smell" possibly put a small bar of soap in the drawers...they make ones specifically for that reason at maybe BB&B?! IDK if you can use that with baby clothes but maybe?!

  • I washed a load or two after each shower.  The earliest shower was at 29 weeks.  It has made it much easier to do it as they come in.
  • I may start doing mine this weekend...since we finally got our closets redone (closetmaid)....I wasnt afraid of the smell of them, I was afraid they would get dusty from hanging up too long without being touched..
  • I would do loads as you accumulate stuff.  I made the mistake of waiting and ended up doing about 4 loads of baby clothes and gear in one day. I wish I had done it as I received it.
  • You can always put a dryer sheet in the dresser drawer after the clothes are folded. It will keep the clothes smelling nice for quite a while.

This is also a trick for the diaper pail. 1 dryer sheet before the sack helps keep the smell down.

  • Go ahead and start, imo.  Or, you can organize by size, and wash later.  Right now, all my clothes are in drawers by size, but I've only washed nb to 6 m.  I figure I've got some time for the older ones!
