Homemade Laundry Detergent okay to use on baby's clothes?

The DH and I have been making our own (poder) detergent for a while now with the following recipe:

1 bar Ivory soap

1 cup Borax

1 cup washing soda

Do you think that it's okay to use on the baby's clothes/bedding/ect?

I found the following on the Duggars website:

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value

4  Cups - hot tap water
1  Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup -
Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
? Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ? Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com). Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!!

It's essentially the same as mine (but in lower volume) and yo know that she probably uses it on the kid's/baby's clothes.

  • That's what we are using, we use a powder recipe that we found online, while ivory does have a scent to it, our clothes never smell like it, and I've heard it's one of those purer soaps, I think it's just more soapy than others.

I am also double rinsing her clothes, I like it because I know there's nothing really toxic in it.

I also checked out the fels naptha and it was a lot more expensive, I'm not sure if it has any scent to it.

  • Ask ShortyRed. I'm pretty sure that she's using homemade...

  • we specifically bought free & clear for the baby and used the homemade stuff (we didn't use ivory.  we used Felz Naptha and the detergent was very unscented in general) on our clothes.  Over time we started using the homemade stuff on the baby's clothes, but that was after at least 6 months.  Not sure what we'll do this time around

  • i use the same powder recipe, but I use the fels naptha soap instead of ivory.  I plan on using it on the baby's clothes.  I originally got the recipe from the EFF blog.  and I asked them about it, and they all use it for baby's clothes
