How much is your prenatal care?

Out of curiosity....

How does your OBGYN bill? Do you have a one time payment fee? Do you pay everytime you visit?

I pay $65 each time I see him but I have a $750 cap per year so hopefully by my 8th month or so I would have already reached my $750 cap and wouldn't have to pay $65 every freaking time I see him.

 My hospital stay is $900..

 *edited to add more info...

& what insurance do you have? I have BCBSF PPO.

Re: How much is your prenatal care?

  • I'm not quite sure.  I don't have to pay any co-pays when we see the doc or for any lab tests, delivery or anesthia.  If we have to pay anything the max is $150.

DH works for the Federal Govn't and the insurance is AWESOME!!

  • Nothing, it's free.  Military pays for it.

    Sorry, I'm not much help.

  • My MW bills a lump sum for prenatal care.  I'm responsible for 20% of the total.  It has to be paid I *think* by week 30.  With DD, I paid $3.5k for my prenatal care & hospital fees.  That's my OOP max.

    I have BCBS.

  • My insurance sucks (great time to figure that out, eh?).  I paid my $20 co-pay for the first visit, but now I will have to start paying towards my $1,000 deductible.  I have a $2,500 cap on the ob/gyn costs.

WITH insurance, we're looking at about $7,500 out of pocket for prenatal care and the birth.

  • My OBGYN bills pregnancy "globally," which means no copays, etc.  They just bill me at the end of the pregnancy for all of my prenatal visits, my delivery, and a 6 week post-natal checkup.  I think tthey charge $3200 (including a standard vaginal birth).  That doesn't include the hospital, lab, anesthesiologist, etc charges.  I have a $1500 annual deductible with my insurance, so once I hit that, I'm golden.

We have AMAZING insurance and I shouldn't have to pay a single dime out of pocket for the visits and the hospital stay (thank you, Google!)  I do have to pay the co-pay on blood work, ultrasounds, etc., but even that's really low (like $10?).  I'm not sure why there's the distinction, though.  I know how lucky I am, trust me!

Do you work for Google?  That's great insurance coverage.

  • WOW! that's crazy!!

I paid $30.00 on first visit and I don't have to pay anything else again...

    Hospital will be around $400.

  • I don't have to pay for OB appointments. I do have to pay for 40% of lab fees and 20% of all delivery costs. So that gets pricey.
  • We pay $40 for the first OB visit, then all prenatal is covered at 100%.  We pay a percentage of the hospital cost, which ends up being about $1500.  All in all, not too bad.
  • I just have to reach my 2500 deductible and we're good to go. This is pretty incredible when you consider that my husband and I are both employed by small business that don't offer insurance at all.  To find this from a private insurer was the greatest thing that's ever happened ;)

  • Free, I'm in Canada...I can't believe you guys have to pay so much to have a child!
  • Clearly, I need to work for the federal government or Google.

My insurance sucks.  No one takes it so I'm always out of pocket and then get reimbursed some of it.  I have to go to a high risk doctor and that's part of the problem.   I have to pay $9800 out of pocket and then they reimburse me about half.  I also have to pay for the amnio, NT scan and some other things out of pocket (not covered by the $9800).  I only have to pay $300 for the hospital though.

Mine calculates the total expected cost of the pregnancy and L&D, then you pay a portion of it at each prenatal visit. My 2nd visit is next week and that's when we find out how much it is. I hope I don't puke when I find out....

This.  I pay $182 three times throughout my pregnancy.  So approx $550 total.  Any extra u/s, testing, etc will then be paid using my co-pay.  I have Healthpartners.

  • We don't get a bill... hubby is the Army so it's free. One of the HUGE perks of the military.
  • We are very lucky. I pay a $10 co-pay for my first visit and nothing else after that - it's all covered 100% including hospital stay, etc. I get the NT scan and 4 ultrasounds. I have Oxford United Healthcare.

I get paid NOTHING (like the same amount I made as an assistant my first job out of college 11 years ago, but now I have a Master's degree) so this helps make up for it.

I second that!  I never knew some people's prenatal/delivery costs were so much!

Mine is similar:  $20.00 for first prenatal visit and don't have to pay again for visits, but I do have to pay $20.00 for each u/s.  Other than that, just the hospital co-pay of $200.   Plus, my husband has a medical spending account at work, so he contributes to that from his salary and it is not taxed, so that's another savings for us, especially this year with the extra medical expenses.

     We have Anthem BCBS

  • I pay a one time fee of $50 for all prenatal dr visits.

The hospital and birth are covered with insurance except for a $200 per day deductible for up to three days for well mom and well baby.

  • My co-pays just went up the first of the year. It was $40/office visit and $150 for delivery. Now it is $50/office visit and $300 for delivery.
  • I'm using a MW and a Birthing Center, so I'll end up paying about $2500 for prenatal and the facility fees for delivery. My insurance (BCBS) covers the prenatal and mw care, but they don't cover the facility, so the majority of what we are paying is for that. The $2500 is divided up so I pay a part of it each visit, and will have it paid in full by the 30th week.

But the nice thing is that we can use my husband's HSA for the payments, and our company matches dollar to dollar up to $750 that we contribute into it, so we are really only paying $1750 out of pocket.

  • with my first, i have no idea how much my prenatal care was. i paid $200 plus $20 co-pays. my hospital bill was a few bucks shy of $10k. i had a c/s and stayed for 4 days.

with this one, i have a MW, and the fee is $3500, plus supplies which will cost about $100. my insurance will pay about $2k of that.

    i have carefirst open access

  • I have Blue Cross HMO through work. I pay $0 copay for prenatal visits. I haven't checked on delivery etc.
  • we have united healthcare and have to pay $400 per visit until we reach $2,000. dh keeps trying to insist i go to a chiropractor, psychologist, pulmonologist...anything i want since this is likely the only time in a while that we'll actually meet our deductible haha he's crazy.
  • We pay for basic health care (ie - dr./hospital visits, specialists, tests (MRI, CT Scans, Ultrasounds, etc), operations, delivery, etc.) through out taxes (plus get a tax deduction because I have to travel 45min. to get care) .   I'm not sure what it would have be "out of pocket" so to speak had our health plan been different.    So, it's very interesting to see what it could havve been:)

Aetna sucks!  Sorry, but true.  If you have anything weird happen, watch out...they love denying people.  I was in the hospital this past spring for something major (not PG related) and they denied me twice---costing me $5000 extra out of pocket.  Just make sure things are pre-approved etc so they don't stick you.
  • I pay $50 at the end (if any extra testing is done without being medically necessary, I would have to pay an additional $50).  I get my insurance through the hospital I work for.  It is pretty awesome....

  • I'll find out at my next visit - that's when I get to set up a payment plan.  I have private healthcare (Assurant) but in Texas that means I do not have maternity coverage.  I'm expecting to pay out around $10K to the OB and hospital combined.
  • I have BCBS. She tried to explain it to me yesterday. To me it's so confusing. I guess total we pay 660 out of pocket. Glad hubby was there to understand it

  • I'm impressed your Dr. gave you all that info already. I sit down with the billing coordinator at my 13 week appointment but she hinted that my office visits will be about $200 or so and then the hospital may be a couple of thousand. My insurance covers 90%.
  • glad to live in canada. haven't had to pay for anything.

  • I am on a local HMO plan (Capital Health Plan).  I pay $25/visit, and then $250 for the hospital stay.  So, my total bill will be really low.  I'm very lucky to have great insurance.

  • I owe the OB $623. It's $89 for the next 7 visits and it will be paid well before the baby is born. I don't know how much we will have to pay the hospital. For DD we owed $800 total for me and DD.

    We have BCBS of Minnesota.

  • I will pay $20 for my first visit.  That's my co-pay and NOTHING else!

Last time my total bill for a vag delivery with an epi was $29,000!!!

  • In Canada you dont have to pay anything, everything is covered, the only thing that would require a cost is the 3D ultrasound and thats optional.

  • My prenatal is one lump of $2800, of which I am responsible for 20% (co-insurance) after my $800 deductible has been met.  My OOP max is 2550, which includes my deductible and co-insurance.  My company gives me a HRA card that pays $500 towards this OOP max.  The total I would pay this year for healthcare (pregnancy included) would be $2050.  Not bad, considering the position some folks are in.

Edited to add:  I have UnitedHealthcare, through a very large employer (300,000+ employees, worldwide).  We used to have a very good co-pay insurance, where I would just pay $20 for each visit.  As of Jan. 1st, we've been moved to the above sh*tty higher deductible, higher payroll contributions, more confusion plan. It was the best choice (lowest deductible) out of my three options.

Those that don't have to pay anything but a co-pay, I wouldn't get used to it, more and more companies are moving to higher deductible plans for their employees as a cost-saving measure.

  • I paid a one time payment of $25 dollars and then at the end I will have to pay my out of pocket max for the year ($250). That's it.
  • But that's 250 minus whatever I have to pay for any bill throughout the year. So far I'm down to paying 225 dollars- my hope is that I'll be going to the regular doctor and each visit will lower my out of pocket payment the the time of the delivery. I also get up to a $250 rebate from my employer if I do all my prenatal precautions...so in the end- virtually free.
  • We have BCBS CareFirst PPO and I have a $25 copay for the first visit, and then nothing after, and at the end we pay 10% of everything else lump sum.  I haven't read the lit myself so I don't know if there is a cap (DH gave me the info and who knows if he had it 100% accurate)

This but we are in Michigan. We are not eligible for group insurance because my job doesn't offer it and DH actually works 2 jobs-part time as a manager and about 30hrs a week at home with his own business. So we have individual with no maternity! We are going to deliever with a MW at the least expensive hospital in town or aim for a homebirth with a MW. Luckily we have thought this through and have a decent amount of $ set aside to have our 2nd child.

    2 losses
    2 beautiful children
    proud mommy!
