Heading to the doctor...

I never usually am one to complain. I realize that being pregnant (especially with twins) there is going to be some aches/pains, and that's all part of the journey. But lately it has been getting really bad for me at work. I work as an RN on a maternity/women's surgical floor there is no light duty here. I am on my feet CONSTANTLY 12 hours a day and as hard as I try I am unable to drink as much water as I should (there are only certain areas you can eat/drink, which most of the time is not near me). I have noticed the last 2 weeks I have started to swell worse even though I wear strong support hose. I took my blood pressure yesterday at work (128/78, not bad, but I normally run 100/64) but my heart rate was 119bpm and I kept getting heart palpitations. By the time I leave work at 7:30 I can hardly walk due to RLP and the tightening I feel in my abdomen.  The tightening is by no means regular or painful contractions, but still concerning to me.

I get short term disability at 70% of my base pay and my husband has AFLAC through his work (which does anyone have experience with AFLAC and bedrest?) I am just an emotional wreck with all of this! Thanks ladies for letting me vent. We'll see what the doctor says

  • Oh sweetie, I feel your pain and I work a desk job!  I went on maternity leave at 30 weeks and received short-term disability.  I delivered my boys at 36w1d.  Going out at 30 weeks was the best decision we could have made - especially b/c I ended up on bedrest at 33 weeks.  I know that I would have been put on it sooner had I continued to work.

I don't have any experience with AFLAC, but good luck with your decision.

  • I am a nurse too (but I work what is mostly a desk job). Is there any way you could talk to your manager about light duty? I know nurses in the same situation who have been able to do things like the audits that have to be done on the floor, or even got to work in occupational health for a few weeks, different things like that. Is your manager pretty understanding? Maybe having a talk with him/her would help? I'm only 14 weeks along so I can't understand how you're feeling just yet, but I'm already worried about it too and I work a desk job now. Good luck to you -

  • that sounds exhausting!! I'm stuck at L&D right now and those nurses work HARD! I really hope that you can either transfer to a light duty job or go on bedrest. For me, stopping work at 21 weeks was the best decision ever. good luck and let us know how it goes!
