I absolutely *hate* when women come to work with wet hair.
Take five to ten minutes and blow-dry it, FFS. You look like a mess.
I let my hair dry naturally all the time. If I scrunch it up with some hair spray it curls but if I dry it it takes me 45 min. I don't really go anywhere nice though, lol
I think it is odd to call people who spank lazy or horrible parents. There is a line between spanking and abuse and some people chose to spank as a form of discipline. It is what works for them at the moment and their children are usually not suffering from it. Plenty of people get spanked and go on to be successful in life. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make them a lazy asss.
i agree w/ the hair thing - i don't even OWN a blow drier ::shrug::
absolutely don't agree with the spanking thing. just like other old school mind sets, i guess it just takes time for the general population to realize that it's just not the most effect/best form of discipline. there are quite a few studies that suggest it does nothing more than instill fear of the parents (which is not the same as respect) and is a catalyst for aggressive behavior.
like i said in my UO just b/c my some moms smoked when they were pg, spanked, let their toddler ride in the front seat and sit in front of the tv 10 hours a day doesn't make it a valid parenting choice TODAY. can you imagine the shitstorm that would ensue if i was like "meh my mom smoked when she was pg with me and i'm fine and dandy - it's my "choice"" or "carseats? pffft...i survived and it's MY choice."

I go to work with my hair wet some times, if it only took me 5-10 min to dry it I would do it no problem.
I go to work with my hair wet sometimes too. I have naturally curly hair and if I wear it curly, I have to wet it in the morning to get it to look good. I have to be at work at 5:50am and can't see getting up 2 hours earlier than normal to let it dry. Then again, during rainy days and handling accidents, my hair might be wet all day long. Not pretty but oh well. It is what it is.

I don't think it's odd at all. I do think you are horrible if you hit your own child. JMO And yes, it is much easier to whack your kid on the butt than employ good behavioral techniques. Spanking=lazy.
ETA: And I'm going to agree with VV again. I know successful people that were into drugs in high school, but it's not ok b/c they turned out successful.

I didn't mean it to turn into a "well our parents did it" thing. But it is true that people use it as a form of discipline and their kids never look back. Of course there are people who go overboard, like my mom, and our relationship will never be the same.
But to call someone lazy and call them names isn't right. Just because you don't agree with someone's parenting philosophy doesn't make them a bad parent. I know TONS of people off the bump that see no issue with spanking and they are wonderful parents. They don't use it as the only form of discipline but sometimes it fits into the situation and they see it necessary. It isn't lazy it is what works for them.
I think people around here get too up in arms over spanking, baby wise, the word "retard", etc. They aren't punishable offenses!
No one around here deserves the MOTY award and we all have made mistakes. We aren't always going to agree with each other but people shouldn't act like their philosophy is the best and if you don't follow it.... you are dumb.

My hair is semi curly/stupid wavy and it's long, if I wash it in the morning and it's nice out I will just pull it half up and go or sometimes stick it all up in a bun. My hair could be wet all day as well and I really don't care, I just can't imagine getting up that much earlier to dry it and straighten it.
I hate them too. I just said the other day that I can't wait to put on pants with a button and zipper. I'm sick of constantly pulling up my pants because they slide down my belly.
After I had DD I was always worried I would forget to zip my zipper because I was so used to wearing pants with a panel instead of a button/zipper. I would check all the time, it became quite an obsession and I agree the pulling up the pants because they slide down is so annoying.

When out in public seeing pacifiers and bottles in kids over 2 bugs me. I worry about these kids and their teeth.
I hate that people judge like this. My kid is hugely tall for his age and I can just see the side-eyes we get when we're out in public and he's doing things that are age-appropriate but people assume he's 3 and we're treating him like a baby.
(FWIW, he doesn't use pacis and doesn't get a bottle other than nighttime. It's just the general judgey-ness that I think is unnecessary. Worry about your own kids.)
I go to work with wet hair sometimes. My hair needs to air dry and basically rips apart if I blow dry it.... if I go to the gym, I just shower and go. But I don't care how I look at work or if other people care.
Texting seems like old technology to me... like the freaking telegraph. Once the phone came out, talking was much more useful. I don't get how texting is all that useful or innovative. I think it's completely worthless.
It blows my mind that people do ANYTHING besides focus on the road when they drive. It's just common sense to look at the road and use both hands. I think it's crazy that there have to be laws against texting and driving. There have been a lot of deaths in our area because of it, and I am seriously terrified on the road all the time, esp with DD in the car.?
I hate when people think if something doesn't have short term negative effects, it's perfectly fine.?
i am sure baby sign language helps a bit early on, but overall i think its ridiculous and delays actual speech bc you accept SL as speaking
I know what you *mean*, but deaf people would take issue with saying that SL is not acceptable speaking. It is speaking, and it is a language, just not an oral one. See what I mean? Maybe a better way of looking at it is if you replace speaking with SL and never require speaking.
and unless you ignore your kid, dont turn around, dont listen to music in the car, and never eat or fiddle with anything - then eh... i dont think you should be talking either. (general you)
punky i lurve you, but i completely disagree
i absolutely don't eat in the car or do anything where my hands have to be off the steering wheel. now i recognize (with my crazy RF/super car safety) that some of my issues come from having some personal car wreck tragedy, but i really do think that it takes less than a second of being distracted to completely fvck someone's life up or your own.
well i think you are a fantastic driver (bc you dont do any of those things). but unless others are the same - then they shouldn't be talking
i just think its stupid to be high and mighty about 1 thing on the list, but "well yeah, i mean i have to eat in my car sometimes" - kwim?
Are you saying no talking at all in the car when you're driving, or no talking on the phone? I'm a little confused.
If you text and drive, you're a complete moron. Hey, how about when you're behind the wheel you put down that phone and fvck!ng drive the car, k? I know it's a new concept for many.
I agree. I dont buy the whole "I dont even look at the phone" thing.
i dont until a light. then i review.
and unless you ignore your kid, dont turn around, dont listen to music in the car, and never eat or fiddle with anything - then eh... i dont think you should be talking either. (general you)
Whoa, there is a huge difference between listening to music in the car and texting in the car. And FWIW I'm against being on the phone at all in a car. Even the bluetooth headset annoys me. It's hard to be engrossed in a conversation and be paying attention to the road. And yes, I do listen to music in the car but I never eat in the car, put on make-up, etc. And no, I can't mess with DS because he's rear facing, I would have to be half out of my seat for that so I guess I ignore him, wtf?

I don't think texting and driving is any worse than putting on your makeup, turning around to chew out your kid, or shoving a Big Mac in your mouth.
I couldn't disagree with you more, sweetie. With the exception of the makeup thing. I mean, seriously, eyeliner? In a moving car? You don't actually have to turn around to yell at a kid, and while I wouldn't eat a Big Mac in the car (too messy), I can usually find my mouth without having to stare the food into submission.
What text could ever be worth hurting or killing someone? What is so important you couldn't use the actual phone you are texting on and use the hands-free features?
And really, what's the difference between texting and driving, and, oh, playing on a DS or PSP and driving? Where do you draw the line?

It isn't. Neither is talking on a Cell Phone. We have a secondary law in WA state that states you can be ticketed if you are on your cell phone but you have to be doing something else that is worthy of a ticket (IE speeding). It's sooooo dumb. Even my DH (Who is a WA State Trooper) thinks it's dumb. I think what is dumb is that you can use a hands free device but not hold your cell up to your ear. I know for me I don't use both hands to drive 90% of the time. They are trying to pass a law to make it a regular traffic infraction instead of a secondary.

Seriously. My mind has been completely blown this morning by how many of you think it's okay to text and drive. I live in a town with a big university, and I know (and SEE) that kids are driving around, texting all the time. I think it's terrifying, and it makes me damn glad that I'm not normally on the road at the same time as these idiots. There are SO many accidents around here (and everywhere) that are caused because of this. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about this...
(I also agree with what someone else said about texting being an "old" technology that's completely pointless- I don't get the appeal either. So stupid.)

There was a 70 year old man riding his bike in the bike lane here, hit and killed by a 16 year old texting... 16 year olds driving are scary enough, but then add them texting. YIKES.?
I am going to be lame and just say ditto to everything VioletVirgo has said in this thread.
I am also going to add that, yes, where your eyes are when you are driving is important, but where your mind is is also very important. Even if you don't look at your phone while you text, that part of your brain is focused on forming the words, not what's in front of you. Haven't you ever been on autopilot thinking about something and missed your exit or driveway? Same thing. Texting while driving is assinine. Period.

sorry jess - its lazy. there is no other way to say it. (well i could think of 100 other ways to say it actually). if you cannot take the time to properly discipline your child and resort to simply hitting them to get your point across - that is lazy. and selfish. and stupid actually. considering what exactly is that teaching? that when you think someone does something wrong - you hit them? it is never "necessary" and to say that parents think it is, well, thats bc they are too lazy to discipline in other ways.
and whatever VV said. ill agree with that too im sure.
I talk on my phone in the car all the time. I have BT built into my veh ... all I have to do is push a button thats on my steering wheel with my thumb to answer or end a phone call. If I want to make a call, I push a button and say a name. GREATEST INVENTION EVER.
I don't think talking on the phone in this manner distracts you anymore than listening to a toddler scream in the backseat ... actually, I think it's LESS distractng.
Texting in the car is DANGEROUS. I could tell you stories of claims I've taken that would make each and every one of you CRY because some idiot thinking a text was more important than the safety of them, the people in their car, and the people driving around them.
Something I see on these boards a lot that bugs me: "I know studies show otherwise, but I feeeeeel this to be true, so I'm going with it."
Usually in reference to vaccinations: "I know that every study shows no link between thimerosal and autism......but I'm delaying/not doing vaccines anyway. It just feeeeeeels safer!"
And now I see it in relation to signing. lol. Language acquisition is cumulative, and includes use of sign language. It helps teach kids that objects have specific names before they can voice them. And if you've never met a kid for whom this is true, I'll invite you over to my house.
I'm with you on the vaccinations thing, but on signing? We didn't do signing, but I didn't have any feelings about it one way or the other. But? I know six kids IRL whose parents did signs with them. They are currently 20m-4y. None of them say more than a dozen words. Four of them are working with speech therapists because of it.
I agree, the kids have language skills. But I would equate it to teaching my kid Japanese words for everything. Because I don't actually know how to speak Japanese, I'm not teaching him how to speak Japanese. I'm just teaching him 10 or 20 or 50 individual words, with no grammar or ability to properly link them together. And he wouldn't be able to use those words to communicate with anyone else in our community. Therefore, I just don't see it as doing him much of a service.
I have to agree with Lori as far as the baby signing goes. The son of one of DH's cousins will be three in April and has a grand total of 3 words - no, mama and dada. He's in EI (though he's about to age out of it) and a huge part of his therapy is learning signs. I totally understood the mindset of this early on - teach him a way to communicate so he wasn't getting so frustrated. But, he's been in the program for about a year and a half now and really hasn't made much progress. He signs like crazy, but really has no motivation to speak because he can communicate via baby signs. His mother will probably have to enroll him in a school full-time this spring, unless he has some sort of breakthrough in the next 3 months.
I know experts would probably argue that I'm wrong, but I honestly think that signs have delayed his verbal development. This is really what swayed me from teaching DS a lot of signs (he really only knows "milk", which he learned after he learned to say it).

listen, maybe its just that people "we" know IRL are against the grain? obviously they are against "the studies" bc they say signing will help with verbal communication and we are disputing that. but a child has no motivation to say "more" if you give him more when he signs it. end of story.
I hate when people allow their children to chow down on fruit in the grocery store. First, if it's a weighed item, like bananas and you let your kids eat three of them (yes, I saw a mom rip off 3 bananas for each of her kids), that's stealing. Second, if it's an item w/o a peel, strawberries/grapes, it's just gross b/c they need to be rinsed before eaten.
Our store gives cookies and ripe bananas at the bakery if your kids would like them. Or you could just bring a snack with you;)
Our grocery store lets you buy a Banana Card for $1 a year. Your kids can get a free banana every time they come in. I love that.

I get what you're saying, and do agree with it to a point. But really, how do you KNOW that my kid (or yours, or whoevers) would have said the word 'more' sooner, if they hadn't learned to sign 'more'? You don't. Jack has about 50 words right now, and several of them ARE words that he also has signed in the past.
Unless kiddo isn't saying these signed words by like 2 / 2.5 or something, I really don't see what the problem is.

I don't understand the vampire obsession this includes Twilight and True Blood
I agree 100%. Add to this the obsession with boy wizards and hobbits.
I'm not obsessed with any of those. It's not like I hang out at vampire bars and get Wizard Butt Monthly porn.
But I don't understand how people lump all "vampire" fiction together, whether to say they love it all or hate it all.
I'm not - I like Ann Rice, I loved The Historian, granted, I've never read True Blood, but I'm sick of hearing about the tv show - and remember I work with teenage girls I have to hear about Twilight constantly

See, I'm generally vamp-friendly, but I found The Historian incredibly overwritten. Didn't care for it at all. In fact, I will read almost anything, from Dostoyevsky to *** and Jane, but I'm about 50 pages from the end of The Historian and have been for more than a year, without any desire to finish it.
I understand hearing too much about Twilight. My sister is obsessed, but I'm just glad she's found something that she likes to read.
And True Blood? The show is okay. It's not Dexter, though. This is one instance where I'll take a non-supernatural serial killer over a pale guy on a liquid diet.

I think I loved the Historian more for it's actual historical stuff (being the history nerd that I am) than for it's literary value. DH loves Dexter, too - I can't get into the gore, although I'd bet I'd like to read a book about - visualizing a story in my head is so much different than actually seeing the gore on the screen

After I had DD I was always worried I would forget to zip my zipper because I was so used to wearing pants with a panel instead of a button/zipper. I would check all the time, it became quite an obsession and I agree the pulling up the pants because they slide down is so annoying.
Thinking of my UO
I know what you *mean*, but deaf people would take issue with saying that SL is not acceptable speaking. It is speaking, and it is a language, just not an oral one. See what I mean? Maybe a better way of looking at it is if you replace speaking with SL and never require speaking.
Are you saying no talking at all in the car when you're driving, or no talking on the phone? I'm a little confused.
Glad to see that you believe a phone call or text is more important than the safety of others.
Wow. According to this board, I pretty much suck at life. Awesome.
* My almost 2 year old still uses her "sassy". It isn't a battle that I feel is necessary.
* I eat in my car all.the.time. FFS, its not like I am eating tacos or a steak.
* I detest drying my hair.
* I have a blog.
* DD's picture is my facebook picture. She is a heck of a lot cuter than I am.
yep.
wait till someone rear ends you with your kid in the car and tell me how "dumb" it is to actually pay attention to the road and use two hands to drive.
i just hate how people have gotten so impersonal now that they can't make an actual call anymore. we are going socially backwards.
So stupid.)
Or when you are biking with your kid IN THE DESIGNATED BIKE LANE and some idiot on their phone swerves and almost kills you both. Thumbs up.
Period.
i think a lot of people live their whole lives on autopilot, sadly.
sorry jess - its lazy. there is no other way to say it. (well i could think of 100 other ways to say it actually). if you cannot take the time to properly discipline your child and resort to simply hitting them to get your point across - that is lazy. and selfish. and stupid actually. considering what exactly is that teaching? that when you think someone does something wrong - you hit them? it is never "necessary" and to say that parents think it is, well, thats bc they are too lazy to discipline in other ways.
and whatever VV said. ill agree with that too im sure.I talk on my phone in the car all the time.

:slow clap: for lori and icky.
listen, maybe its just that people "we" know IRL are against the grain? obviously they are against "the studies" bc they say signing will help with verbal communication and we are disputing that. but a child has no motivation to say "more" if you give him more when he signs it. end of story.

I'm not obsessed with any of those. It's not like I hang out at vampire bars and get Wizard Butt Monthly porn.
But I don't understand how people lump all "vampire" fiction together, whether to say they love it all or hate it all.
oh i don't. youre right. and how do you (general) know that your kid spoke earlier bc you signed at 1 year old. right? so its all "who knows" of course.
I automatically assume that moms who SAH married rich.
I know it's wrong to think that way but I can't help it.
Maybe you are jsut assuming they are dirty and stolen...the produce guy and I have become friends. He knows that we almost always shop on Mondays so he ready and waiting with washed snacks for us. Deli gives us cheese too. I could always bring my own snack, but whatever produce guy has always seems to win over my stuff...
I wish it was!!!! My DH is a municipal employee (Firefighter) with a PT job too! COmbined, he makes great money, but I couldn't stay home if he only worked one job.
