Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hi and pretty please . . . HELP! (sleeping; long)

Hi everyone, LO just turned 6 months and wakes 1-3x a night. I'm working so it makes for a hell of a day, to the say the least. Here's the problem:

First, DS puts himself to sleep at 7pm but is difficult in the middle of the night. Second, he started daycare January 4th and only naps there about 30-40 minutes total. I put him down for a nap at home around 3:45pm. I know that poor day sleeping is adding to his nightwakings. Usually, at his first waking DH gives him a small bottle - 4 oz, watered down since he gets 30 oz during the day. Dh does this after a few minutes of trying to rock him back to sleep. At his second waking I always try for about 5 minutes to get him back to sleep without a bottle. Doesn't work. He screams. So i've been giving him a small bottle of water instead (pedi Oks this). I have been giving him water and watered down formula in preparation to wean him soon. Also at 5am, he's been getting more and more difficult to put back down in his crib. He falls asleep in my arms and then wakes screaming as soon as I put him in the crib. He gets more agitated with my soothing him in the crib. So I've read Ferber's book about weaning (decrease an ounce at a time) and am in the process of this.

Do you think I'm encouraging his night wakings by picking him up? I try to soothe in his crib. Fails each time. Do you think I'm at the point where I can just not give him a bottle and hold him as he screams or maybe have to let him CIO? I know a lot of you are opposed to CIO but I'm at my wit's end. Help!

Re: Hi and pretty please . . . HELP! (sleeping; long)

  • My pedi says it is perfectly acceptable for a 6 month old to go a minimum of 6 hours without eating overnight.  We do (at pedi's rec) 6:30- 7pm bedtime, first waking around 10 and she gets a BIG feeding because she doesn't eat well at bedtime, second waking around 1and DH soothes her back to sleep.  If she doesn't fall asleep, we CIO for 15 mins and DH tries again.  We continue at 15 minute intervals until she falls asleep.  We know she does not need to eat at that time, so we are attempting to wean her from comfort nursing every 3 hours.  Then, at 4 she eats again.  She wakes for the day around 6.

  • Thanks for replying. Last night LO went 7 hours before waking which was awesome - 3am! But, after that it was not fun! Sometimes my DH does try to comfort him without a bottle, but the screaming really gets to him. Sigh . . . maybe I just need to suck it up and sleep train after he's weaned down to like 2 oz a night.
