2nd Trimester

Anyone else gain 20 pounds by 24 weeks?

I know weight gain isn't our favorite topic on the Boards but I'm feeling a little down. I just got back from my 24 week OBGYN visit (I'm actually 23w4d) and I've gained a total of 21 pounds. My starting weight was 130. These last two appointments I've gained 10 pounds in 4 weeks.  My doctor said I need to really watch it. She is worried about the rapid weight gain.  I never had any morning sickness and I am always hungry. I'm just wondering if anyone else can relate.  I work out 3 days a week too, doing the elliptical for 30 minutes.  Also, if anyone can recommend healthy, low fat/carb snack foods that actually fill you up.

Thanks for listening ladies.

Re: Anyone else gain 20 pounds by 24 weeks?

  • Yes, I am ashamed to admit it but I've already gained 20 lbs.  It's been steady throughout the whole pregnancy & my dr just keeps saying I was too skinny before anyway.  It still bugs me a lot though.  I know I'll lose it after b/c of my love for working out, but it's still annoying now.

  • I have a total wt complex.  I have found that fruit nut mix stays with me awhile.  Lots of protein.  I say you are being healthy, so don't get down.  I am hungry all the time too.
  • I feel ya chica! was up 6lbs till 17 weeks then 18lbs at 21 week apt BUT I have been lucky to only gain 1lb since. My Dr said combo of Holidays and baby growth spurt and not to worry about it. I ran through my first 4months so dr said my body just was trying to "catch up" She says not to worry and she wants me to stay under 30lbs total wich she said is still doable and if I go over a bit no big.

Try not to stress. I know it's hard to see some stay SUPER thin through this point but we are all diff and as long as you are working out and eating well then you are good :) Here if you ever need  :)

  • I'm only 14 wks so I am not there yet, but I can definitely relate to being hungry ALL the time!!  I have found that if I pair a carb with a little protein for a snack (apple/pb; cheese/whole wheat cracker) and choose foods high in fiber (Oatmeal helps fill me up in am with a little milk) that helps satisfy me longer than just reaching for a piece of fruit which lasts like 20 minutes!

don't be hard on yourself either, some of it could be water retention- I knew a girl who gained 20lbs in the 1st tri and lost 45 lbs after the baby was born!!

    HTH!!

  • This is my second pregnancy, mind you, but I am 165lbs right now at almost 27 weeks and I started off at 127lbs. . .I feel like a big ol' fatty! lol.

  • Im a pretty petite person and I started out at 103 pounds when I found out I was PG. I went to my 25 week appointment this Monday and Im 125 pounds! My Dr. didn't seem to be worried about the weight gain at all, seeing I was underweight to begin with! I know your feeling down, but just know that all this gain is going to your LO and it will be so worth it in the end! Keep your head up! Hope you feel better soon!
  • I know some people don't like weight gain threads, but I don't mind them.  Having your body change so rapidly is really hard to wrap your brain around sometimes (or at least, it definitely has been for me) so it's nice to get a little support and feedback.  *hugs*

I don't have any brilliant advice, unfortunately.  I've been eating lots of fruit and yogurt as snacks.  They're pretty filling and guilt-free.  I also buy ice cream in the little tiny "school cafeteria" cups.  They're only 100 calories and pretty awesome.  :)

Overall I'd say try not to fret too much.  You can always worry about it AFTER baby comes!

  • I'm right there with you... I'm only 20 weeks now, but I have gained 17 pounds already.  I'm also hungry all the time, but also trying to get more exercise.  I exercised a lot before my BFP so now I'm just getting back into it after my first trimester fatigue!  I thik for me I just need to watch my sweet intake a little more.

  • At my 20 week appointment I was up around 20 lbs.  My last two appointments have been the Monday after Thanksgiving and then Christmas so extra cruel!  I blame it on morning sickness that was avoided by eating carbs constantly and the fact I was underweight pre-pregnancy.  Since my appointment at 16 weeks I've been trying to make some better choices with my eating but I think the weight is going to come either way.  This is one reason I'm grateful for a spring baby-lots of nice weather to help motivate me to exercise!!

  • I find the low sugar oatmeal sticks with me really well. It's not low carb, but it's high fiber and is one of the only things that sticks with me longer than 2 hours!!  So far I've only gained 6lbs, but I started out heavier than you AND had pretty bad morning sickness!  The hunger has set in so I'm concerned about my next appt!
  • I've gained 19 pounds as of today.  My dr and I discussed it, and its probably because I've given up my serious diet coke addiction for juicy juicy.  He said that as far as vitamins I'm probably doing better but that its much better for me to drink diet coke than juicy juicy.

  • I just try to surround myself with A variety of healthy treats, assuming that something will sound good... Often things that I wouldn't normally treat myself to ( like precut fresh fruit, the more expensive yogurts I like, etc). Good luck!

Really?  Even w/ aspartame?  What about just drinking water?

  • I've gained about 17 lbs (at nearly 21 weeks), so yes, I think by 24 weeks I'll be up at least 20 lbs.

  • I will found out tomorrow.  It won't surprise me if it is over 20 lbs.  I will be 24 wks on Friday.  At my last appt., I was up 16.5 lbs and that was before Christmas or my vacation.  The funny part is, I can barely eat, she is pushing up into my stomach but I still seem to be packing on the lbs.  I dieted before getting pg and then when I became pg, I started allowing myself a little freedom, cheese for protein, a little dessert here and there. But it is crazy how fast I am gaining with just a little change in diet.  :)
  • 25 weeks and 25 lbs....I'm right there with you sister!
  • I feel so much better----

I started out at 130 and I am now 146 at week 22.  So 16lbs in 22 weeks.  The Doctor is advising me to watch it, he said I was on track to gain about 35 lbs but he would prefer me to gain only 30 or less.

I don't know- it could be much much worse. But still it is unerving to watch the scale go up.  As for tips- one thing i noticed is I am really thirsty a lot and sometimes I eat when I am really just hungry.  In terms of healthy snacks- veggies (celery and carrots) and hummus.  Whole grain cereal with fresh fruit,  plain yogurt.  I also try to have lots of salad (strawberry and spinach is my favorite).

and i don't mind posts about weight- sometimes it's nice to know you aren't the only one not gaining as per the guideline.

    The water is an assumption.

  • I'm 25 weeks and at my doctor's appt yesterday I had gained 24 lbs - I went from 115 to 139. I haven't changed m eating habits at all and I feel good about how I look. My doctor hasn't said anything to me about being concerned, so I'm not. I'm sure your doctor knows best, but I just hope that they are not worrying you unnecessarily. As far as snacks, I mainly eat (and did before I was pregnant) celery and ranch dip, cheese, fruit, and peanut butter crackers. Here is what I looked like pre-pregnancy:

And here I am now with 15 weeks left to go!:

Hope that helps, GL to you!

  • 20 lbs at 23 weeks here. I gained 40 total with DD#1 so I am guessing I will gain the same with this one too. I was fortunate to lose it all last time so let's hope that happens again! I think bf'ing really helped me lose the weight last time.

  • Ive gained 19lbs and im 23 weeks so im right there with you
  • Yep.  Exactly 20 lbs by 23 weeks.  I was worried about it but doc wasn't and I was not underweight before pregnancy -- weighed pretty much exactly what I should.  Actually, I gained 6 lbs in weeks 21-23 and she wasn't worried about that either.  This week I gained nothing so I guess it's evening out.

  • I had gained 15 by 21 weeks and last week when I went for my 25 week appt. I had only gained 3 more.
  • I REALLY appreciate all your responses ladies. I'm glad I'm not alone.  I wish you all the best and thanks again for listening.

  • I don't think you should worry too much.  One of my friends gained 75 lbs with her first baby.  She was a little underweight pre pregnancy.  She had a healthy baby and no issues, and she lost all the weight afterwards.  You're growing a person inside you, so you're going to eat more and gain weight.  At least that is how I look at it.
  • I am at 22.5 lbs at 24 weeks. I know why I have gained it though, I have been eating crap for the last 15 weeks or so. ;-) I have desert about 3 times a day and my portions are out of control. I also gorge on junk all day. I have no one to blame but myself. My dr. wasn't too concerned when I went in for my appointment. She said I would probably gain about 35-40 lbs and I am ok with that. Not happy, but ok. I figured since this is my last pregnancy I am going to enjoy it. ;-)
