why does the healthcare bill frighten you? i am all for any thing that will guarantee all americans access to decent health care.

I don't think socialized medicine works. I guess I have too many experiences with family members being treated in VA hospitals to have rose-colored glasses about what this means. In countries where socialized medicine has been successful (i.e. Denmark) there are many less people (in this case only about 6M) and their income tax is about 40% just to sustain 6M people.

What would our tax rates climb to in order for us to support 305M people? I'm not a big fan of government dictating my healthcare, either.

For example, in countries with socialized medicine. If you go through IVF you are only allowed to transfer 1 embryo. This is to keep the cost of HOM off of taxpayers and keep the population down. I just wouldn't ever feel comfortable going through all of this and being told, by my government, what decision to make.

Lastly, I wasn't all too pleased with how key Democrats were "bought out" by other members of their party essentially giving certain states a free ride for their vote. Clearly, the majority of Americans are against this bill, yet the government keeps forging ahead.

It no longer feels like a government for the people, by the people...

what was proposed wasn't a socialized healthcare system. health insurance for all americans does not equal socialized healthcare.

and fwiw i am not thrilled with the legislation as it currently stands. unfortunately pork barrel politics are a fact of life in this country.

  • Can you believe that happened in THAT state?!  I never, ever, ever thought I'd see this day.  :)  I'm pretty conservative so this obviously makes me happy.

I couldn't disagree with you more, though you are of course entitled to your opinion.  But actually this is related to IF, as one of the most disturbing things I heard this week about Mr. Brown is that he has already introduced a bill in the MA legislature to "review" the MA infertility coverage mandate passed nearly 30 years ago as he sees insurance mandates as too expensive for MA businesses (I think IF adds 1% to premiums).  MA was the model for all IF mandates that have been passed in 13 states.  I hope we can all agree that women should not have to pay OOP (i.e. mortgage their future) for what is a legitimate medical condition. ::stepping down off soapbox::

This is why I wish I could've voted against him.  I benefit from MA's infertility coverage as a worker but am a resident in another state.  I know there are so many couples going through ART OOP, but it should be your states that are ashamed (including my home state) for not having this.

I was not impressed with the health care bill, either, but I don't believe he has the compassion I think he should on the issue.

  • NOPE. I actually lived in the town of Wrentham before we moved to South Fla. And he is kind of a duch we would run into he and his wife in town alot, He also **ck up the towns bill to rebuild the highschool and his daughter is even worse (I know that that means nothing but still). He says he is just a "guy who drives a pick up" but he also lives in a mansion in the same division were all the Patriot Football players live.

Also, Scott Brown now wants to get rid of the law which mandatates the IVF coverage in the state.  This is something that Kennedy legacy would be rolling over in there graves about.  Senator Brown, says that it is taxing the state two much and it isn't a necessary proceedure it is "elective.." and why should the state pay for it.

On the same note, Marth Coakly (sp?) is just as bad. She ran a terrible campainge and didn't deserve to win..My question is where were all the Kennedy kids, they should have ran..I also think that the Obama health care isn't a good idea. There is going to be a lot less that insurance is going to pay for and that we will pay out of pocket if this bill will pass

  • I try my best to stay away from political issues on this board but, I am just curious to know how many people on this thread have health insurance or may be losing it in the next month or so.  Because I for one am pretty much almost in that category.  And being in my sucktastic situation of IF, I will basically be f**ked because of my "pre-existing" condition.

Now I am not defending this bill completely but reform needs to happen.  And the idea of "whoopee" they are going to crush the "liberal" agenda drives me up the wall.  I am personally afraid that this is what may happen and it will be pushed off the table to "start from scratch."  and in essence nothing will be done.  We have to make sure no matter what goes down that everyone needs access to basic healthcare.

I grew up in the Soviet Union, and the idea of socialized medicine frightens me.

I'm at a loss at to what in the proposed bill is "socialized medicine"?  Would doctors be employed by the government? (no)  Would the government replace insurance companies with single payer? (no)  I work in the insurance industry and nearly my entire family works in healthcare.  We need reform, not scare tactics.  Take time to move beyond the sound bites, please.

    So well said
