Woudl you work 60% or 80%?

knowing that you'll have a much more interesting job if you work 80%?

ETA: Here's the situation. I worked 60%, but was missing out on a lot, the 'good' projects weren't being assigned to me, etc. Totally understandable because I wasn't physically here to meet with the stakeholders on their timeline. I went to 80% and am definitely more involved and engaged at work now, but I miss that extra time at home with my kids. I am trying to decide if I should stick to 80% or go back to 60%. I have my annual review tomorrow so I need to bring it up then as we will be planning my work for 2010.

Re: Woudl you work 60% or 80%?

  • I'd rather spend the extra 20% on something more interesting instead of wasting 60% at something I'm bored at.

  • I'd work an interesting job at 80%...but if the choice was 60% vs. 100% I'd take being bored at 60...
  • Hmmm... it really is up to you.  If you like being challenged at work, do the 80%.  If you would rather have an extra day with your kids, do the 60%.

I personally love the 80% schedule, it works really well for me.

LOL. yes, this is my dilemma. I don't know which is more important to me right now. I want it ALL dammit!

  • 80%. To me, the interesting work is what makes working worthwhile. And the money, of course.
  • I would go with whats more interesting and more enjoyable for you. Ive done a job that I hated and couldnt imagine having to take care of DS at the same time.
  • I think it depends on you!  And the ages of your kids, personally for me, I work 50 percent and will consider 60-70 percent when they both are in school FT.  But I have my own business so the challenging/interesting factor is all up to me.  Downside, so is the salary.
  • I'm struggling with this right now. My job is interesting at 60 but would be more so at 80.
