Questions about sharing breastpumps...

I know I've heard it's not good to share breastpumps (I'm not talking about hospital grade ones, obviously) because of cross contamination, but my BFF IRL is pregnant and mentioned borrowing mine when I'm done with it.  She's due on Jake's 1st birthday and I don't think I'll be needing it much past then.  Anyway, I quickly googled it and found a lot of info on transmitting disease but how is it possible to transmit anything if she's using all new tubing, flanges, etc. and she's just using the actual motor? Is there still a reason I shouldn't want her using it?

  • I don't know, but I plan to give my friend my pump when her baby #2 arrives (Toodle will be about 10 months old). I'm buying her the accessory package with flanges/tubing etc. Not too worried about it, especially since I've never seen milk actually go into the tubing at all.

  • *technically* because it's not a completely closed system milk could get into the motor from you then get back out into her stuff... likely, no.  possible, I guess :)
  • If they are 'open' pumps then some small amounts of milk residue can live inside the motor.  Rare, yes....but is it a risk you really want to take? There are some closed pumps out there (I know my ameda/lansinoh is one) and there is a blocker between the flanges and the motor.

This!  I've had plenty of time to study my Medela PISA in my four daily pumps at work and I really can't figure out how it is possible for this to happen.  Maybe if I fell asleep for an hour and milk had all that time to back up through the tubing, lol.

  • My friend almost had milk enter the motor of her pump... she was pumping, looked down, and saw milk going up the tubing very close to the motor. So it is possible for it to happen (we both have the Medela PISA). I've never had this issue though... as long as the other woman didn't mind, I would have no problem letting someone borrow my pump when I'm done with it.

  • I would not a share a pump on a daily basis with someone but if you are letting her borrow it and you are not longer using it I think you are fine.  I forget what the time is for diseases to live outside of the body but I know it isn't all that long.  So on the off chance that milk or milks condensation did get into the pump, I believe it is 7 days what ever was in the pump would be died and couldnt be passed on.  I am no medical expert so I would double check on this.
  • This is strange to me (not sharing a pump but milk getting in the motor).  I have the medela freestyle.  I kind of don't get how milk would/could get in the tubing much less the motor. Huh?
