You do not want something sealed, as air flow prevents smell issues. Counter-intuitive, I know. I use a toggle-top kitchen trash can with a mesh laundry bag. I have a bunch of bags that rotate for the CD pail and the regular baby laundry. It makes it easier to pick up the bag, bring it downstairs, and wash everything (including the bag). And I also automatically have a clean way to bring everything back up. This is the "dry" method, no soaking. Soaking is no longer considered necessary. It's actually more hazzardous to babies (drowning is bad) and diapers (all of the synthetic materials are not made to take that kind of abuse).
This board is a lot more active during the day/afternoon/early evening, so try reposting then if you need more input. There are a bunch of helpful, friendly people here and they will probably cut you a lot of slack for being a newbie. Feel free to ask away. You can learn a lot by just reading and "lurking" too. Welcome!

I use a garbage pail like this one. I use a Whamies pail liner and haven't had any problems!
This is exactly what we do. We started out using a trash can w/ lid and a whammies liner. It was too stinky!
