Laundry detergent for baby?

My cousin told me I needed to use Dreft detergent tro wash all of the baby's clothing, etc.  I normally use All Free & Clear, as I have super sensitive skin, and can't have dyes or fragrances in my detergents.  From what I read, this is similiar to what Dreft sounds like.  Is there any other reason I need to use Dreft?  Can I continue using my normal detergent once the baby arrives?  Thoughts?

  • Stick with All Free & Clean, IMO.  Dreft has added fragrance and is more expensive.  My dermatologist, OB and pediatrician recommend AFC.

One thing they did recommend was to keep the baby's laundry separate for the first year.  Most washers easily transfer human fecal bacteria from adults to baby laundry, and their systems can't really handle it until they are older.

  • I would also keep using what you've been using ... I'd stay away from Dreft because of the fragrance, etc. that's been added
  • All free and clear will be just fine.  You want something free and clear thats it.  My daughter had bad excema sp? and dreft made it worse.  But anything free and clear was fine.

    Oh, gross!

I have also been using a F&C since DD was a few months old.  I wash all of our clothes in it since her skin touches our clothing when we hold her.

  • All Free & Clear is fine. We will be using Tide Free except for the one bottle of Mrs. Meyers Clean Day baby scent detergent that I just got (because I'm obsessed with that brand).  In fact, it's good if your whole household uses the same 'free' detergent because the baby will come into contact with your clothes when you hold them, etc.

Btw, you can also make a habit of adding white vinegar to your rinse cycle to soften the clothes without using a softener.
  • All free and clear is actually a better choice imo.  Dreft has fragrance that can irritate little ones.  We never bought anything but All f&c.
