big cupcake question

I got the Williams Sonoma (metal) big cupcake mold for my daughters smash cake. It comes with a recipe, but I was hoping to use a box cake mix.  I know it's the cheaters way...but since nobody is really eating it I don't want to go to all the trouble. Do you know if you have to alter the recipe from a box....also, how long to bake?

TIA

Re: big cupcake question

  • I make mine with cake from a box.  You need two boxes though.  Well, one and half, but good luck with that.  And it takes like an hour to bake.  Set the timer for like 40 mins, then just keep an eye on it.  When the top starts to crack and the edges pull away from the pan, you're good to go.

I just got this pan too.  I also plan on using box cake mix.  How did you grease the pan to make sure the cake came out in one piece?  I have enough trouble doing this with regular cake pans!

    THANKS! :)

  • I'm not sure if your pan is bigger then the Wilton pan but I got away with only using 1 box of cake mix with no problems.  I also baked at 325 for an hour..had to take the 'top' of the cupcake out sooner than the base of the cupcake since there was less batter in that part.  Hth!

You can grease and flour the pan or I have Wilton Cake Release (got it at AC Moore) and that worked great as well.

  • I second the cake release, use a lot of it. I used a box and a half of mix. I made a 'Boston Creme Pie' cupcake with mine, it was awesome. Homemade ganache, a little whipped creme and cherry on top. it was so easy to do this because you just pour the ganache on top, nothing on the bottom. If you do this (or do a pudding filling), use Hunt's pudding packs, they don't require refrigeration. Or at least this is what my Wilton's instructor recommended.

This isn't my blog or picture, but mine looked practically identical to this: https://www.shoptvproducts.tv/2009/07/big-top-cupcake-bonus-recipe.html
