I also have a climber on my hands, she likes to climb chairs and stand backwards on them. She is Also very fond of the stairs, fireplace, and rocking chair. I just put the chairs to her little table away and I covered the fireplace with pillows and a blanket and that kept her away. I'm going to follow your post to get some ideas myself
If we put DD down for two seconds, she's off to the stairs and trying to climb up them. At least she's getting good enough at them that it doesn't give me a heart attack every time.
I don't know if they're everywhere, but around here indoor play gyms / bounce places are pretty popular. We took DD for the first time on Saturday, and she LOVED it. There had a toddler sized area with soft ladder type activities and it was padded if she fell. Bad description; am attaching a picture. Best part - kids 1 and under we're free ($6 otherwise), so it was cheap entertainment for a couple hours.
DD has been climbing since she figured out how to be mobile, I swear! She loves to get on and off of her little play chairs, but hasn't attempted the table yet (that's my next worry...). She likes to crawl over the rungs on our bar stools, and also is a big fan of standing in her rocker and holding the back of it. She's attempting to get up on the sofa and ottoman, but she's still just a tad too short (or just hasn't figured out how to use her arms to pull herself up well enough yet).
Have you tried the couch cushions on the floor (instead of just pillows)? She loves that.
I've never really tried to stop her from climbing... if it's getting too crazy, I distract her with a book and she'll sit for awhile, but I figure she's learning how to balance and trying to determine some depth perception, so I just kind of let her go at it.
DD is a climber too...she tries to climb any and everything...we finally broke down and bought a baby gate because we were tired of having to chase her up the stairs 100 times an hour....for the most part, all she can currently reach to climb at our house is the recliner and the chair, so we let her have at it. I agree with PP, if she gets to trying to climb something dangerous, the only thing we've found that helps is distracting her- ours is a stubborn little girl and if I were to put cushions in the floor, she's take great pleasure in throwing/pushing them out of her way and going back to whatever she was doing.
Maybe it's because DD2 is my second kid and I think you are more relaxed the second time around, but I let her climb almost anything, as long as it's not super dangerous and I am close enough to catch her.
For example, I let her climb onto the bathroom stool which is pretty tall, she then stands on it and checks out everything on the bathroom counter and we will brush our teeth. She has learned how to get down off of it as well. She sits and then rolls onto her stomach and slides down. Obviously, we do shut the bathroom door anytime an adult is not in there.
Unsupervised we allow her to climb onto the ottoman in the living room. We have a short little step stool which we keep by it and she goes up and down, up and down all day long. Since we started doing this, it seems to have helped her get her climbing fix in and and she doesn't attempt to climb other things as much.
She is very independent and smart. She will move the stool over to the couch sometimes and get up there. In comparison to her sister at this age, she is much more advanced in her gross motor development. DD1 only started walking at 13.5 months and DD2 started at 10.5.

Yup, same here. Trying to stop him only makes it worse, so I'm kind of like @sweettalkin417. I just supervise and try to minimize the danger level. I am telling you, though, this child is fearless! It freaks me out a little bit.
