Do you have a "mommy schedule" at work?
I'm still working 8am to 5pm.  With an hour long commute each way.  It's honestly murder - I feel like I work from 6:50am (when we leave the house) to 6pm (when we get home).
Did you drop a work day?  Working from home some days?  Fix it to arrive late or leave early?  Or are you still doing the "standard" work schedule?
Re: Do you have an alternate schedule?
I work four 10 hour days every week and have Friday's off. I also telecommute full time, but I did that before baby.
So far so good. I've only been on the 4 X 10 for a week.
DD -- 5YO
DS -- 3YO
My schedule didn't change after I came back from maternity leave (outside of adding in pumping breaks). I still work 8-4pm 5 days a week. I do work one day from home, but was allowed that before. The kids still go to daycare. But, without this day at home, I believe I would be swimming in household chores the rest of the week. I use my normal commute time (this is the only day DH takes the kids to dc) to catch up on laundry/dishes/etc and am ready to work by 8am. It's a lifesaver.
Although I would like to have more of a part time schedule, I know I wouldn't be allowed the flexibility I now have (which sounds odd) at my job. So I stick with it.
thanks to jennied
i switched my schedule to the following:
Mon- Thurs: 7-4
Fri: 8-5
on Mon & Tues my husband drives alex to my mothers which has me leaving the house @ 6:15am & getting to work by 6:40am
on Wed & Thurs i drive alex to my mother's which has me leaving the house @ 5:30am & getting to work by 6:40am
on Fri i drive alex to my mother in laws which has me leaving the house @ 6:30am & getting to work by 7:30am
i pick alex up everyday which has me getting home between 5:30-6pm.
working 7-4 really helps- i can actually get home at a reasonable time! i can also work from home if i want (but i never do because i hate it)- but it's nice to know i can if it snows or something.

About 30% of the time I'm in the studio and have no control over my schedule. Typically those days are 9-7, but it could be more. However the rest of the time is flex time. So it's either complete flexibility or none at all depending on the day.
The first year after I had DD I did all my flex time from home, so that was nice. But I've since gone back to working in the office.
I do this, too! I am actually kind of p*ssed that this wasn't an original idea I came up with. I totally thought I invented the 9 day pay period
My baby is two!!! Baby girl 9/17/09
My other baby is still a baby! Baby Boy 11-30-11
Well, my schedule is as follows:
Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: 8-4:30
Wednesday & Friday: 8-6
Really the only difference is prepregnancy I was working 8-6 every day.

Trying again..
With my daughter, I continued to work the standard work day - I also had an hour long commute one way. I worked for a family owned company in a job I hated and they were less then flexible. My boss actually talked to me about coming in 15 minutes later than usual in the morning (I was salaried) even though I stayed 15 minutes later in the evening. I was there for a year when I got a new job that was only a 20 minute commute from home. That was wonderful but also short-lived (a year).
I've been at my current company for over 3 years and just started working from home so that I can pick up my dd from Kindergarten and drop her at daycare. I didn't go looking for this as an option, it just happened upon me based on some organizational changes at work and a very understanding and flexible boss.
::sigh::
for serious, sometimes I feel like I am one of the few that doesn't have an alternate schedule. so frustrating.
I came back at 20 hours for a few weeks (which I loved, RIP 20 hour work weeks). Then 30 for a while, now 36. 4 full days in the office, half a day from home on Friday (in theory).
I come in at 7:30, leave at 4. If I don't get out until 4:30, I majorly screw myself over traffic-wise.
I do get to WFH and try to do it around nap times, but when I'm working I'd actually rather just by in the office. I do wish I had a shorter commute, it's usually around 45+ minutes home.
Could you make a case for it?

you're on here too!?
i'm going back to work soon and been lurking on this board.
i'm also going to be out of the house 11 hours and it SUCKS! i wish i could drop a day or work only 7 hours instead of 11 (this includes 1 hour each way commute)
my work wont let me alter my schedule at all
but secretly i'm actually excited to go back, i just wish it wasnt so many hours
did you already go back? how was the first day?
I work three days, 25 hours. As long as I'm there most of the "normal" day I can work whenever I want as far as stop and start. I started this job PT but honestly I don't know how you would take a job and drop time. With first LO I just quit; it was too stressful and the media I dealt with would not put up with me not being available 24/7 like I was before. They offered me flex or PT but it just didn't make sense.
I usually work 9-4:30 and go to the gym at 4:30. My only real constraint is that childcare is open from 8-6. I actually want to add a fourth day back into my schedule (it's a second child thing--honestly I'm not a baby person and working is SO much easier).
Two weeks to go until I can go back!
I wanted to go to four-day weeks, but we can't afford the 20% pay cut.
I now work 8-4:30 instead of the 8:30-5 that my coworkers work. That extra half hour is nice, and I like getting in early in the morning since I'm up anyway!
I also am able to work from home Friday afternoons - I get Henry on my lunch hour so we're home by 1:00 ... between his afternoon nap and time I put in outside of regular work hours, I'm able to get those four hours of work in somewhere. (Actually haven't done this yet since I've had the past two Fridays off - but it's the plan anyway!)
I feel like moms should get to have flexible schedules as long as the work gets done!! Is there any way you can rearrange your hours? The hour-long commute really sucks, I don't envy you there.
My half hour commute, plus pick-up/drop-off at daycare which adds time, is annoying enough!!
Though I know you've mentioned that H sleeps through the night ... my man has yet to do that, and the past three nights, he's gotten up TWICE ... so I'm exhausted!! (totally off the subject - but I DO envy you there!!)
DD #1 passed away in January 2011 at 14 days old due to congenital heart disease
DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption
Sweets, I don't and it sucks. I get up with the wee man by 6:15am at the latest, out of the house before 8 to drop him off at daycare. I work 9-6 and get home around 7 every night. It's tough. I'm lucky that D can pick him up in the evenings.
My only alternative would be to work 8-7 or 9-8 four days a week. I don't know if I could deal with that.
My hours are usually about 730-415. I can change it up if I want but my husband's job isn't as flexible and I like to carpool with him. Sometimes we work longer days on M/T to leave early on Friday. I have a 45 min commute inc. daycare dropoff.
I work M-Th and I love it. Technically I work 8-5, but my boss doesn't care and lets me make my own hours. So I can come in late, take a long lunch, leave early, as long as my work is done. DH does daycare dropoff in the morning, and I do pickup at night, it has worked well for us.
Having Fridays off is wonderful. Also I still get full benefits, perks, etc, just with a 32 hour week.
already tried & denied
  twice.
woooot!! I'm so glad you're on here, too!
My work won't let me alter it, either. I've tried. They just won't budge.
I went back last Monday (the 11th). It wasn't TOO bad. & honestly, it's not that bad. I like being back, but squeezing it all into the day is totally starting to wear on me.
You??
I work M-TH, 9-4:30pm. I get every Friday off until DD is 1 year old. We have a very generous maternity leave here and in CA we have CA paid family leave, which is what is allowing me to get a day off every week. I decided to use it one day a week instead of using it in one 6 week chunk so that I could transition and manage things better.
I'm a nurse who works nights so my schedule is crazy and all over the place. One week I only work 24 hours and the next week 60. For now it's the only option but I'm on the waiting list for days. Luckily I have an awesome sitter who accomodates my schedule.
It took a while to get used to but we are getting there.
