Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Question about food!

My little one is 4 months old.  I EBF and pump while I am at work.  She eats approximately 6 oz every three hours.

I was wondering if I should be starting cereal.

FYI...we went to the doctor last week and he said it was up to me (NO HELP at all!!!!) and we could start anywhere between 4-6 months.

Just wanted to see what you do....

Re: Question about food!

  • If you feel she is ready and shows all the signs then go ahead. We tried giving our LO cereal at about 4.5 months and he didn't like it so we waited a week and tried again.

  • It is up to you, whenever you want to start between 4-6 months. We just started a couple days ago. It's a lot messier than bf-ing or bottle feeding but really cute too.
  • My son will b 4mths on the 29th. He was getting hungry every 1.5-2hrs. so i started to add cereal in his bottles. I would take ques from your baby. If they are acting still hungry after a normal feeding then it may be time. Most of the BF moms that I have talked to don't start baby food until around 6mths and the Bottle moms seem to start earlier.

  • I started DD right when she turned 4months..it took about a week for her to really like it

its all up to your LO if she is ready, you could try it and she how she handles it

  • That's what my dr said too.  I started DD right at 4 months and she did great.  I started DD at 4.5 months and he wasn't as into it.  Give it a try and see how she does.  If she doesn't "get it" try again in a week.
  • I say get a book too (I have Super Baby Food and its ok) to help guide you through the process. I dunno what online resources are out there on it.

I say start now, because that way you can introduce things gradually and figure out your routine before the 6 month mark hits.

Your LO can have rice cereal, apples, sweetpotato, banana and avacado. You introduce the foods one at a time and wait like 4 days after each first new food meal to have that food again so you can see if your LO has any reactions to it. I've decided to buy the jars of apples and sweetpotato but you can just mash up the bananas and avacados easily. I think you mix milk in with the banana and avacado but I'm not sure!?

I just sit LO in her boppy for meals. I feed her a teaspoon of rice cereal mixed in with 1/2 oz of milk. its not as much as what others do but thats all she eats, tops.

Also, you start giving them water once you start giving solids, even if you are mixing it with milk. I think you start out with just a table spoon or 2 of water but then you increase it as you give them more and bigger meals.

Water isn't necessary until babies are 1 year old- they get all the liquid they need from formula or BM.

  • We had our 4 month appt today and got the same thing.  We gave DS cereal tonight.  He loved it at first then got tired of it.  So we are going to keep trying it every night.  Figure he will only get better.  He ate it right away and only was spitting it out toward the end.  I'd say give it a try and see how your LO does.
