Adoption

Life Unexpected - Did you watch ?

Did anyone watch this new show ?  Basic premise is that girl gets pregnant at winter formal, places baby for adoption .... baby is not adopted because she needs heart surgery and is 3 when she's done with everything, baby bounces around from horrid foster family to horrid foster family. Finds birth parents to try and get their signatures to emancipate her so she doesn't have to be in foster care anymore. Judge won't emancipate... and they end up with temp joint custody of the now 15 yr. old kid. Actually 16 at the end as the show incorporated her birthday.

IDK it really kind of bothered me the way they portrayed "Kate" the birth mom as some irresponsible horrid person who didn't want to take responsibility for her actions and left her daughter all alone with no one to love her. Personally I think birthparents should be given more credit for their selfless act of trying to do the best for the children even when it will be hard for them. IDK just seemed to perpetuate some neg. stereotypes. I mean I realize it's a TV show... but it just sorta rubbed me the wrong way...

  • OH yeah, it's a drama TV show that is going to be a series.  Her birth was supposed to have been in 1994.

  • I did watch the show.  I thought it was strange that Kate was not involved in picking a family for her daughter...alas, it's just fiction.  I think it's going to be an interesting show:)
  • I didn't watch it at all, but it's loosely (and from your description I would say very very loosely) based on the creator's life:

And secondly, can I say how depressing it is to me that someone born in 1994 is old enough to have this storyline? It makes me feel very old.

Oh , I'm totally going to be watching. I was just was thinking about how the story seems unrealistic and how they portrayed Kate as irresponsible... and what kind of message that puts out about adoption and stuff...  Just wanted to get a convo going, see what others thought.  =)

  • i get very irritated with the continuous portrayal of "horrid" foster homes. they never, never talk about the good ones that are doing great things for these kids.
  • I agree! As a birth mom I've definitely gotten those comments from others saying that making an adoption plan for my son is just a quick way to get out of being responsible. I on the other hand completely disagree and feel that adoption is the most responsible thing I can do for him. Those stereotypes of birth moms being careless and irresponsible just annoy me!

That is the very first thing that popped into my mind when I read the year of the girl's birth in this post!  I was in high school in 1994, so the mom in this show could be me.  And the thought that it would be possible for me to have a teenager makes me feel very old.
