Is 4 mo too young for timeout?

I think DS gave me a timeout yesterday.  He was crabby and whiny when I got home from work (he was fed and rested) and after trying the playmat, exersaucer, tummy time with various toys, and cuddling his mood only got worse.  As soon as I stuck him in his swing he calmed down and proceeded to give me a dirty look as he just swung away for the next 30 min.  He clearly did not care that mommy missed him.Crying

  • ha!  Sometimes DS does this too.  He is crying or fussing and I'm trying everything to calm him down.  Then I finally get frazzled and stick him in his swing and leave the room for 2 minutes... and he quiets down immediately and is happy as can be all by himself!

  • I don't consider it 'timeout'. That implies a punishment.  I have given the boys quiet time when I thought they were overstimulated. I've laid them on the mat or their cribs with low lights and soft music for 10-20 mins (they hated their swings). Maybe one or 2 soft toys if they want to cuddle. But otherwise I leave them alone and just keep an eye on them. It seems to help most of the time.

I started this at about 12 weeks when I was home between 4:30 and 4:45 inthe afternoons.  They seemed to need the break as much as I did,

  • i wish my LO would give himself a "timeout." if i leave for even 1 minute just to get myself water or to change the laundry, he freaks out and starts crying. he used to be more independent, but lately he's gotten more clingy/needy.
  • We do that, too.

Harrison is happy to be held & passed around, but by 6ish, he wants to be in his swing or jumper.

  • Sometimes babies need time to themselves. They don't want to be constantly held or entertained.

  • The first week of daycare DS ignored me every day when I got home.  He did not want to be held, touched or looked at.  He wanted to be in his swing, music off and left alone with a grumpy look on his face.  It broke my heart. I think he was just overstimulated and needed some downtime.
