Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DD is getting treated for MRSA (long!)

The other night I noticed what looked like a bad diaper rash towards the top of her butt cheek.  I put rash cream on it and after a couple nights it cleared up except for one spot.  It looked like a pimple, but it also looked like it was going away so I wasn't concerned.

::WARNING! THIS GETS PRETTY GROSS::

Yesterday afternoon I was changing her diaper when I noticed a little blood and pus in her diaper where the pimple would be.  I rolled her over and put a little pressure on it to see how it felt and a TON of pus came out.  The spot was also hard so I know there was more infection under the skin.  I kinda freaked out because I had MRSA a few years ago and also cellulitis several times and SO gets cellulitis and I know it can be dangerous if it's not taken care of.  I called the on-call pedi and he said if any more pus comes out to go to the ER, otherwise just make an appointment first thing in the morning.   No more came out last night.  Today the pedi looked at it and he agreed it's either MRSA or cellulitis.  He couldn't get a culture to test for MRSA but he prescribed an antibiotic that treats it just to be safe.

She seems to be ok and not in to much pain, but it just breaks my heart!!  I have a couple ideas where she may have gotten it (either the cat or MIL....both are long stories......) but right now I'm just scrubbing and sanitizing everything.

 I know I'm not a popular or well known poster on her, but please keep DD in your T&P.  If the antibiotics don't clear it up, we'll have to be referred to a surgeon who will cut open her little butt cheek to get the infection out and I really don't want her to have to go through that.

  • Poor LO. I will keep her in my prayers.

  • I hope that the MRSA clears up with the antibiotics and that your LO will not need surgery.  Your LO is in my T&P.

  • I hope the antibiotics work!  I'm scared of my son getting MRSA too since I work in a hospital.  I am a carrier for it (all nurses are) so it makes me a little nervous.

  • You don't need to be popular for us to give T&P to your LO and your family.  You most certainly have mine!!  I hope the antibiotics work :)
  • Poor baby, you will surely be in my thoughts.

    My oldest DD had a staff infection in her hip from an infected dog scratch when she was about 1. It started off as a little pimple so I squeezed slightly in the bathtub and pus came out, she didn't even flinch so I thought nothing of it. The next day it was the size of a ping pong ball and oozing crazy. By the time I got her to the ER she was already septic and needed to be on IV meds for 10 days and have to have it drained. It got really bad, really fast. You're lucky that you noticed it right away, you never know with those kinds of infections.

    Keep us updated

  • Thank you for posting your story!! I really hope DD gets better ASAP!

  • Poor LO! Hope it clears up with the antibiotics.

    I had MRSA last year on my knee and had to see a surgeon to make sure it didn't get to the bone.  Thankfully, it did not.

    Best of Luck!

  • Aww, poor baby. I hope everything clears up soon.
