Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep Question HELP

My almost 5 month old does great sleeping at night once she is asleep. She will be sound asleep in my arms then the second I set her down she is awake. I feel guilty leaving her and walking away. I swear she looks into the video monitor and starts to cry for me. Some nights she does good other nights it takes an hour or two to get her to sleep. Tell me how you put your baby to bed. We already do bath, book, bottle, bed. I just need help knowing how long I should leave her fussing/crying before I go into the room. Any ideas welcome!

Re: Sleep Question HELP

  • Read the book, How to Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems by Richard Ferber.

  • My DS falls asleep every night being rocked with a bottle.  Sometimes he'll wake up briefly when I lay him down, but snuggles in and falls right to sleep (I lay a heating pad in his crib to warm up the area first).  We also do the typical routine - bath, get into PJ's, quiet time with Daddy while I get the bottle ready, then I take him and rock/feed him to sleep.

Tonight he fussed a little bit when I layed him down, but he moaned himself to sleep.  Took less than 5 minutes.  If he started crying, I would probably let him cry for only 5-10 minutes before going in to comfort him.

  • Our routine looks like this: Get baby into sleep sack, feed bottle, read book while rocking her to point of drowsy, then setting her in crib with kisses goodnight. We let her put herself to sleep this way and hope she doesn't associate bedtime with bottle. Sometimes (or in the beginning of this routine) she would fuss, but we wouldn't go in until it started to turn into more serious fussing or a cry or two. Then we'd shush her gently, replace her nuk, and rub her tummy if she's not fully crying. Otherwise we'll repeat from the rocking point.

    HTH!

  • My DD usually falls asleep during her bottle after bath time but if not and she's sleepy we lay her in her crib and turn on the mobile. She'll fuss for a few minutes but usually falls asleep within 20 minutes. We stay nearby and pick her up if she really cries though.

  • No Cry Nap Solution has some good tips for how to move them from in your arms to in the crib without waking them up.

I try to keep her swaying back and forth while I'm transitioning her, and then put her down as gently as possible. Once she's down, I keep one hand on her and pat her stomach a little until she is completely asleep.

  • I am reading "Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Kim West and it is working so far... day 10. Check it out or check out Feb Parents mag. There was an article about different sleep methods.
  • Thanks for all the advice and ideas. I think I am in this bad situation where we have bad habits I am trying to break. :( RIght now she is still in our room in the pack and play. I am planning on moving her into her own room this week and start working on the sleep ideas.
