3rd Trimester

Anyone retake glucose test at 28 weeks?

My numbers came back perfect from my first glucose test but my doctor said I am taking another 1 hour glucose test at my next appointment. I am wondering why I need to do this again? I didn't think of asking him until now, is it common for people to take this test twice if their first numbers came back fine?

  • 28 weeks is the only time I took it.  Seems like they had you take it early for some reason and are just repeating it at the standard time.

  • i switched drs pretty late (around 28 weeks) so did not get the GD test til about 30 weeks, failed the 1 hr, and had the 3 hr at  31 weeks. really late and the dr was concerned about it. but i think 28 isnt so bad.
  • Most people don't take the glucose test as early as 23 weeks because it usually doesn't appear until later on in pregnancy.  The GD is caused by hormones created by the placenta. The more the placenta grows and the further along you get, the more of these hormones are created.  That's why the standard testing time frame is 28-30 weeks.  Some people are tested early if they are exhibiting symptoms, have many risk factors, or a family history.  Those people still have to be retested later in the normal time frame.
  • I had to take the 1 hour twice, once at 15 weeks and again around 29 weeks. My doctor wanted to test me early because of my strong family history of diabetes and my increased risk (obesity).

I passed the first one with flying colors (96) and failed the second one (145). The cutoff is 135, and I fasted before both of them.

Maybe it goes either way? A lot of people on 2nd tri talk about taking their glucose test around 16 weeks, but I usually don't hear about another one at 28 weeks. I am high risk for preterm labor because of a double uterus and double cervix, but I don't think GD would affect that. Maybe I am wrong and this is why they want me to retake it?

  • I failed my one hour (I took at 22 weeks, bc of Diabetes in the family).  I took the three hour (at 24 weeks) and passed.  Last time I went to the Dr. she said that your metabolism changes and slows the way sugar is metabolized later in pregnancy, so I have to take the 3 hour again at 28 weeks.

Just be glad you are only taking the one hour again.  I'm sure you will do fine.

But to answer your question, if you do it early, they will make you do it again.

    Ah thanks! Good info!

  • I was first tested at 20 weeks and again at 28 weeks. Pregnancy hormones hinder insulin production and such a problem peaks between between 26-28 weeks thus the need to retest.
  • I was first tested for this at 18 weeks because diabetes is very heavy in my family including my mom and sister. I passed that one. I was also just tested again at 26 weeks and I'm assuming I passed it because I didn't get any phone calls or anything, but I found out that my blood pressure is pretty high, so I'll be going in again next week to have that checked out again.
