3rd Trimester

Something to think about...vacuum or forcep babies.

I'm not saying this is the cause but it made me think....  both of my sisters have two kids each and the each sister had one kid who was a vacuum or forcep baby and they both ended up having A.D.H.D.

What do you think?

  • Are you serious? I don't doubt that it's just a coincidence.

  • My DH was a forcep baby and is the calmest, most patient person I have ever met.  So, I don't think there's any correlation whatsoever.

  • I've also heard heredity could be the cause so I'm praying...

  • That's likely just coincidence. I don't see how one could cause the other.
  • I think ADHD is overdiagnosed. And (I'll probably be flamed for this) I think it's more likely that the child is a victim of lazy parenting.

Do real cases of ADHD exist? Yes. Not as many as people think.

  • I have ADHD and wasn't delivered using either of those!! That's what we call a coincidence... don't read something into every little thing or you will go crazy!!
  • Pure coincidence. ?Period.
  • I think it sounds crazy. :)

I am sure there are a bazillion c-section kids out there that are ADHD.

It's almost 100% inherited!! Usually either of the parent has ADHD, or ADHD traits. But I agree with an OP, I completely think it is over diagnosed. Like I said, I have it and know what its like to have it. I work at a school so I see so many different situations and think it is a fall back for some parents who have a hard time with their children.

  • I was a forceps baby and I'm the farthest thing from ADHD that you could get.  I don't see how those two things would even go together. I say complete coincidink.

    I second this.

  • Yes, its a good possibility thats a coincidence but it just made me think about it.  I've also known other forcep babies who have grown perfectly normal.

Umm, I think this thought process is ridiculous. They used the vac with my eldest son and he doesn't have a single issue. He's a genius, and actually about the calmest person I know (markedly more so than my other son- that they used nothing with).

I third, fourth and fifth this.

  • Is there a large scale study somewhere that makes you think this?  Because a 2 person sample size is not exactly compelling evidence.

  • I think this is nothing but noise (as in data that doesn't represent any trend).  You can't just take 2 kids and decide there is a correlation, and one step further - a causation, between vacuum/forceps and A.D.H.D.  I'm sorry, I am a statistician, and this is my pet peeve.  If you really believe this, I would read up on research done on A.D.H.D and on vacuum/forceps use.  If you are just super worried (I know I'm having all sorts of insane thoughts as the arrival of this baby nears), I would say: don't worry! :)
If being a math nerd is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
  • My first was a vacuum delivery and a traumatic one at that, being one suck from an emergency c-section, and he has the most even, relaxed temperament...
  • both my girls were vacuum deliveries and they are both fine and normal.
  • No, I work in the field, with major researchers of ADHD, and I diagnose it all the time. I have not come across anything suggesting that vacuum deliveries or forceps cause ADHD. Now, maybe there were other birth issues that caused the need for such interventions that maybe can be correlated with ADHD, like prematurity or something. And no, I'm pretty sure it's not 100% heritable. Maybe try a google scholar search of ADHD and birth interventions and see if you get any empirical evidence rather than asking on a bump board.

  • Are you serious?  Give me a flipin break.

  • I don't think there is any connection. But I am not a doctor and have done no research.

ETA: and my husband has ADD but was not delivered with forceps or vacuum. So I officially call bunk.

  • I call this crap! Just coincidence that your sisters kids both have it. My son was born with forceps and he even had facial damage with them( it healed) and he is the smartest little 2 year old I know. I don't think that has anything to do with it~

Is it possible for you to answer a question without the snide, judgemental remarks? I've seen a bunch of your posts tonight and you are usually calling someone ridiculous or wrong. Come on! It IS possible to impart your opinion, which is all you are giving, without talking down to everyone, isn't it?

As to the original poster, I am with the rest of the crew here, without debating the qualities and/or potential causes of A.D.H.D. when I say that I think it's a simple coincidence only.
