Babies on the Brain

Anyone had an amnio?

Long story short we are probably having our c/s this Friday rather than next so we will be doing an amnio wednesday to check lung maturity. Most of the doctors seemed to think it wasn't neccessary but at least one in the practice does so we are opting to do it for peace of mind if nothing else. Anyways if you had one what was it like? Did it hurt? I don't really get why a couple weeks ago they were telling me it would have been fine if baby came but now want to do an amnio but whatever!

Re: Anyone had an amnio?

  • Wait, won't Wednesday be one day from term for you?  Unless I am missing something, I personally would refuse the amnio.
  • Loading the player...
  • I hope that everything goes well.  I really don't get why they are wanting to do an amnio this late in the game - I thought our LOs should be fine at this point!

Oh, and this Friday is so soon!  Eeep!

  • You will be 38wks, measuring ahead the whole time...I would not do an amnio. By 37w you are full term, so what are they checking? I don't understand why NOW they want to do it, but a few weeks ago they were ready to have a c-section with no real hesitation.

But I have not had one, so I can't answer your question! Good luck on everything.

  • at this point, if it were me, i'd probably refuse the amnio.
the benefits would not seem to outweigh the risks, but i'm not a doctor, so who knows.

  • Most hospitals require it to check for lung maturity if you deliver at 36 weeks or before.  Because you are over 37 weeks, I wouldn't do it, unless there are issues with growth of the baby.

  • I am also on the no-amnio team.  You are too far in the game to need one.

  • Yeah I really don't get it but I guess if there is an issue I want to know rather than not. I'm so confused since every doctor seems to have a different opinion.
  • I had an amnio since I delivered dd at 36 weeks due to pre-e.  If you end up going for one I recommend wearing dark clothing as they paint your entire belly with iodine.  They will ultrasound you the entire time to look for a good pocket of fluid and mine hurt pretty badly, only because I contracted during the process.  Otherwise I have been told it doesn't really hurt.  You will be monitored afterword to check for contractions and monitor the baby's hb.

  • I didn't have one but it is fairly standard procedure from all of my research.  I was told I had to have one if I wanted to be induced before 39 weeks otherwise I would have to wait until 39 weeks to be induced without one.  My son was measuring large and we needed to decide if we were going to go vag delivery early or c/s. We chose to wait it out because I would rather have him healthy and me go through a c/s and I personally didn't want an amnio if I could pass it up.  Luckily for us he came only a few days later.

There recently was a post where a lady was well over 37 weeks and she had one done and the baby's lungs were not developed.  I would not pass up the opportunity to make sure that my baby was going to be ok on the outside first.  Just because you are considered full term doesn't mean your baby is ready to be an outside baby yet.
