So, I had to share what I've discovered in the past couple of days. Maybe everyone else already knows this, but just in case...
My daughter took 40 minute naps like clockwork the past couple of months. Fine, but she'd get progressively more tired/frustrated throughout the day. So, just experimenting the past couple of days...when she'd start to turn her head side to side, waking up...I go in, get her before she totally wakes up, and rock her for 20 minutes or so (she wakes up and smiles, but I keep it quiet and she falls back asleep in 5 - 10 minutes) and put her back down. She then sleeps for another 40 minutes.
She very rarely can fall asleep on her own, so I think she also can't make it through the sleep transitions that happen every 30 - 40 minutes. I'm so excited that this is working and she's going to get the sleep she obviously needs!!
Re: 40 minute nappers
That's great! I have a 45 minute sleeper myself. I have tried going back in before she fully awakes but so far it hasn't worked for us. She does not like being rocked to sleep, she wants to lay in her crib and put herself to sleep so other than putting her paci back and rubbing her I don't know what else to try.
DD has been napping for a half hour every 1.5 hours since about 8 weeks. It doesn't really bother either of us. If she's still tired and yawning, I'll swaddle her for a longer nap, but I know we'll have to stop that soon. It doesn't happen very often, though. Once or twice a week.
Definitely keeping this in mind for later, though!
