Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How many times a night do you replace the paci?

Last night (and most nights) it was 5.  DS cries out from his crib (in his room) so I go in and he is still sleeping but crying so I put his paci back in.  He then is quiet and sleeps for another couple of hours before doing this again.  He is swaddled so he can't really self soothe.  Any tips for reducing this?  I feel lucky that all I have to do is go in and replace his pacifier but I would love to not have to get up 5 or 6 times a night to do it! :)

Re: How many times a night do you replace the paci?

  • DD had a phase of doing it every hour. Now she only needs it replaced once. We were desperate to get her out of the swaddle so I purchased a peke moe ...this crazy looking thing from New Zealand. I transitioned her into it and she can suck on her hands through the fabric but her hands don't wake her up. Just an option.

Another thing is that although I don't necessarily subscribe to CIO, babies do sometimes cry in their sleep. I know it sucks and is annoying and hard to sleep for you, but it might be worth it to see if he can go back to sleep on his own as long as he's not crying for an extended period.

  • Natalie only takes the pacifier right befores he falls asleep. I usually have to replace it twice before she is out and I don't have to worry about the pacifier. She usually wakes up 3x a night to eat.

  • we're having the same problem...it varies from night to night - sometimes he sleeps until 5 am until he wants the paci, sometimes he'll wake us up 4 times during the night for it.

it's the only reason that he's still sleeping in the pack & play in our room at night, so we don't have to walk to the other end of the house just to pop in a paci.

once he gets a little more adjusted to the daycare schedule in the next 3-4 weeks, we're going to start gearing up to get rid of it.  in the meantime, i just hope he learns to reach out & grab it.

  • We have to put it in several times (although sometimes none) right after putting him down and then don't do it again for the rest of the night. He sleeps straight through.

To OP- my LO sometimes cries out in his sleep and if I wait a few minutes he just goes back to sleep...I've gone in and he's still asleep so don't even bother putting his paci back in. Maybe try that?
