Babies: 0 - 3 Months

RP - Cloth Diaper users please answer some Qs - thanks!

OK, so Dh and I were kinda thinking about cloth diapers and we're pretty clueless...  So what's the scoop?

  1. How many do you need to buy?  And then you need to buy more when they change size, right?  How many different sizes are there?
  2. I know you use disposable inserts in the cloth diapers - so in a single day, do you change out the inserts and leave the cloth diaper on for a whole day (unless there's an accident, of course)?
  3. Is it really more economical?
  4. Does anyone switch between disposables and cloth?  Which is what we thought about doing (maybe disposables at night, and definitely disposables when LO goes into day care at  months)
  5. Are they a lot more work?  How often do you need to do the wash with them?  Will it be more overwhelming for a first time mom?

Thanks for answering!

    1. How many do you need to buy?  And then you need to buy more when they change size, right?  How many different sizes are there?  We use Bum Genius 3.0, they are in all in one size so we just needed to buy those. I was told 24 diapers. We currently have 20 and wash everyother day.
    2. I know you use disposable inserts in the cloth diapers - so in a single day, do you change out the inserts and leave the cloth diaper on for a whole day (unless there's an accident, of course)?   Our inserts are washable too.
    3. Is it really more economical?  I think so!
    4. Does anyone switch between disposables and cloth?  Which is what we thought about doing (maybe disposables at night, and definitely disposables when LO goes into day care at  months)  We use disposables when we are out, and for the first 2 weeks of LO life. Otherwise we use all cloth. Our daycare is using them as well.
    5. Are they a lot more work?  How often do you need to do the wash with them?  Will it be more overwhelming for a first time mom? We don't find them to a be a lot of work. We wash about every other day. We wash 2 cycles, dry and then stuff and put away. Really not a hassle.

    1. We have the BG 3.0 which can be adjusted for size. We only have 12, and I wash every or every other day, depending. But we use 1-2 disposables a day right now too. We wanted to make sure we liked them before we got a ton.
    2. Our inserts are washable, only some kinds have a disposable option.
    3. It is in the long run. And definitely saves on waste, which is more important to me. We do cloth wipes too (unless its poop) and that definitely saves money very quickly.
    4. We used disposables till LO was 3w old, and we still use 1-2 at night while we are getting adjusted, but I am ready to go all out, DH isn't so sure lol.
    5. I am a first time mom, and I don't think they're overwhelming at all. You just have to do an extra load of laundry, run it twice and then put them back together (if you have the pockets like we do) We  do cloth wipes, and they just get thrown in the wash/dryer with the diapers (we do inserts only in the dryer, although you can dry them if you want)
  • 1. ?We also use the Bum Genius 3.0. ?We currently have 23 of them. ?It was recommended that we get 36 but so far 23 is working out just fine. ?I don't like to go very long without washing them. ??

    2. ?Inserts in 3.0's are not disposable and they get washed with the diapers.

    3. ?I definitely think it is more economical. ?I actually registered for my diapers so I did not have to put out the initial start up cost. ?

    4. ?As of right now I switch between diapers. ?People have also bought us regular, disposable diapers so I have been using those too. ?I didn't start using the cloth until about a week ago. ?The 3.0's don't fit great until LO is 10 lbs.

    5. ?It is more work but not an overwhelming amount.?

    1. How many do you need to buy?  And then you need to buy more when they change size, right?  How many different sizes are there?  It depends on how often you want to do laundry and what kind of diaper system you're using.  We're renting kissaluv size 0 for the newborn stage, and we have 24 of those plus 5 covers (4 Thirsties Duo Wraps and 1 Bummis Super Brite).  I do diaper laundry every other day at this point.  Once DS outgrows the KL0s, he'll be in one size pockets (mostly bum genius 3.0s, but a few Haute Pockets and FuzziBunz) like his sister  those will last through potty training.  As they get older, they go through fewer diapers per day... for an older (not newborn) baby, I think 18-20 would be sufficient to do laundry every other day.
    2. I know you use disposable inserts in the cloth diapers - so in a single day, do you change out the inserts and leave the cloth diaper on for a whole day (unless there's an accident, of course)? I do not use any CDs that use a disposable component.  With the KL0s, I wash the diaper and lay out the cover to air dry (unless it gets poo on it... then it goes in the pail with the diaper).  I re-use the covers 2-3 times before they get washed (again, unless they get poo on them).  The pocket dipes that DD is in get washed after each use.  The shell is not re-usable between washings.  The inserts also go in the wash.
    3. Is it really more economical? Yes.  Absolutely.  I have a fairly large stash (since I have 2 in diapers), plus the rental diapers, and I would say that I've invested about $500 in diapers - and I won't have to spend any more (unless I see something totally adorable that I want, lol) on diapers.  Not another penny ever.  $500 for two kids entire diapering lifetime?  That's awesome.  That's less than a year's worth of disposable diapers.
    4. Does anyone switch between disposables and cloth?  Which is what we thought about doing (maybe disposables at night, and definitely disposables when LO goes into day care at  months)  We do use disposables at night.  My DCP will use my pocket diapers.  Check with your DCP (take a prestuffed diaper with you) to see if they will use what you have.
    5. Are they a lot more work?  How often do you need to do the wash with them?  Will it be more overwhelming for a first time mom?  it's really not that much more work.  I wash every other day.  It's really no big deal to throw a load in the washer and transfer to a drying rack/dryer.  Stuffing the pocket diapers is what takes the longest, and that's just 15 minutes, maybe, of my day.  Not a big deal at all.
There's a lot of good information on the EFF blog to answer any questions.

    Thanks for answering!

    1. We use prefolds with covers. We have about 36 prefolds and have about 10 covers.  This is definitely enough and tend to do diaper laundry every 2 days.  With prefolds there are only two sizes, infant and toddler (actually I think they make preemie size too)
    2. We don't use disposable inserts - or any insert for that matter..
    3. YES! We spent a total of 350 on my diapers and plan to use them for all the kids I have.
    4. We don't use disposables at all.. At night we tend to double up the diaper, and even the daycares in our area will do cloth.
    5. I haven't found it to be overwhelming at all.  Other than some extra laundry, I don't see how they are much different from disposables -  we just throw the dirty diaper in the hamper instead of the trash. We do a diaper wash every two days - which is normally a cold rinse, then wash, then dry.. other than the extra pre-rinse it is not much different from doing any laundry.  Of course, once babies start eating solids there will be the extra step of rinsing off any poop before wash, but by then we should be pros with cloth! : )

You can always try it out first. There are a few online companies that provide a trial run before you commit.  Even if you are commited to cloth, this allows you to try out the different types and find the right style for your little one.  Hope you choose cloth!  Good luck!

OK, so Dh and I were kinda thinking about cloth diapers and we're pretty clueless...  So what's the scoop?

    1. How many do you need to buy?  And then you need to buy more when they change size, right?  How many different sizes are there? We have about fifteen, but I'd like to get about five more. We use one size diapers, so we'll be able to use them the whole time he's in diapers.
    2. I know you use disposable inserts in the cloth diapers - so in a single day, do you change out the inserts and leave the cloth diaper on for a whole day (unless there's an accident, of course)?  We do not use disposable inserts, that sorta defeats the whole purpose of cloth (for us atleast). Ours are reusable and need to be washed before we use them again.
    3. Is it really more economical?  Definitely! Especially because we use one size diapers. Plus the resale value for pretty much all cloth is pretty great.
    4. Does anyone switch between disposables and cloth?  Which is what we thought about doing (maybe disposables at night, and definitely disposables when LO goes into day care at  months) We did disposables at night in the beginning and now we're doing all cloth which I like much better.
    5. Are they a lot more work?  How often do you need to do the wash with them?  Will it be more overwhelming for a first time mom? I was afriad I'd be overwhelmed, but I'm really not. I absolutely LOVE cloth diapering and am so glad we decided to do it! We wash everyday, but could get by doing it every other day if we wanted to. I actually look forward to diaper laundry (lol, yea I'm probably crazy!)
